Austria made a winning return to the FIFA World Cup stage by securing their first victory in the competition since 1990 after defeating debutants Jordan 3–1 in an entertaining Group J encounter.

Ralf Rangnick’s side left it late to seal the result, scoring twice in the closing stages at the home of the San Francisco 49ers to ensure a perfect start to their campaign.

Jordan, appearing at their first-ever World Cup finals, showed plenty of ambition and energy and made life difficult for Austria throughout much of the contest.

The underdogs began brightly and nearly opened the scoring early on when Odeh Fakhoury forced Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager into an important save.

Despite Jordan’s encouraging start, it was Austria — making their first World Cup appearance since 1998 — who struck first in the 21st minute.

Romano Schmid collected possession on the edge of the penalty area, shifted the ball onto his stronger foot and unleashed a magnificent effort into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Jordan responded immediately and came close to restoring parity. Ali Olwan headed against the crossbar from a corner before Schlager was once again called into action to deny the lively forward.

Olwan, Jordan’s leading scorer during qualification, eventually got his reward five minutes into the second half. Exploiting space down the left side, he drove confidently into the penalty area before producing a composed finish beyond Schlager to score Jordan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

Austria believed they had regained the lead in the 67th minute after Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila failed to deal with a corner and Marko Arnautović bundled the ball home.

However, celebrations were cut short following a lengthy VAR review which ruled out the goal for handball against Stefan Posch.

Austria continued to push forward and eventually restored their advantage in the 76th minute — once again from a corner. Under pressure inside the penalty area, Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab inadvertently headed into his own net.

Jordan searched for another equaliser but their hopes were ended deep into added time.

Following a second VAR intervention, Mohammad Abu Zraiq was penalised for handball inside the box and Arnautović calmly stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, placing his effort into the bottom corner to secure all three points.

The victory marks a significant moment for Austria as they end a 36-year wait for a World Cup win and place themselves in a strong early position in Group J, while Jordan can still take encouragement from a spirited performance and their historic first World Cup goal.
