Atletico Madrid survived a dramatic 3–0 second-leg defeat against Barcelona on Tuesday night to secure their place in the Copa del Rey final with a 4–3 aggregate victory.

The Spanish champions came close to producing a remarkable turnaround following their heavy 4–0 first-leg defeat in early February. However, despite an inspired display at Camp Nou, Barcelona ultimately fell short against Diego Simeone’s resilient side.

Teenager Marc Bernal struck twice for the record 32-time winners, while Raphinha converted from the penalty spot as Barcelona attempted in vain to overturn the deficit. Atletico, forced into a desperate rearguard action in the closing stages, held firm to reach their first Copa del Rey final since 2013.

They will meet either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao, who contest the second semi-final on Wednesday.

Barcelona’s Brave Attempt Falls Short

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick admitted his side’s disappointment but praised their performance.

“We are disappointed but we can be very proud about the performance we showed today,” Flick told reporters.
“It was an amazing game from us and we created a lot of chances to score even more goals. In the end it didn’t happen and we have to accept it.”

Simeone, however, insisted Atletico deserved to progress over the two legs.

“We were close to getting back to the final in recent years, and in this two-legged tie we were better than Barcelona,” he said.

Barcelona began with intensity, with Fermin Lopez setting the tone early on with a powerful long-range effort that narrowly cleared the crossbar. Flick’s men pressed relentlessly in pursuit of an unlikely comeback.

Their momentum was disrupted when Jules Kounde was forced off through injury in the opening exchanges.

Atletico threatened sporadically on the counter-attack, with Antoine Griezmann testing his former club. Ferran Torres fired wide and later saw a low effort at the near post saved by Juan Musso before Barcelona finally broke through.

Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation, drilled a low cross across the face of goal for fellow 18-year-old Marc Bernal to convert from close range, as youth combined to ignite hope inside Camp Nou.

Ademola Lookman squandered a headed opportunity for Atletico, a miss that proved costly moments later. Spain midfielder Pedri was brought down in the area by Marc Pubill, and Raphinha calmly dispatched the resulting penalty, sending Musso the wrong way to double Barcelona’s advantage before half-time.

Atletico Dig Deep Under Pressure

Joao Cancelo came close to adding a third, only for Musso to produce a full-stretch save, with Atletico visibly struggling under sustained pressure.

Bernal’s second goal intensified the drama. The midfielder volleyed home Cancelo’s swirling delivery to reduce the aggregate deficit to a single goal and set up a frantic finale.

In a bold tactical move, Flick deployed centre-back Ronald Araujo as an auxiliary striker in the closing stages, chasing a fourth goal that would have completed a stunning comeback.

Gerard Martin fired narrowly over the bar as Barcelona pushed relentlessly, buoyed by a raucous home crowd during six minutes of stoppage time.

Yet Atletico’s defence stood firm. The Rojiblancos weathered the storm and confirmed their place in the final, scheduled to take place in Seville on 18 April.

Relief and Uncertainty for Atletico

“It’s been five years since we won a trophy — we wanted to reach a final for our fans,” said Atletico captain Koke.
“We knew we would be up against it. You have to suffer and resist. The team did what it had to do to get through.”

There remains uncertainty over whether talisman Antoine Griezmann will still be at the club by the time the final is played, with the French forward reportedly linked with a move to MLS outfit Orlando City.

“I hope he will play in the final — he deserves it more than anyone,” Simeone added.

Barcelona Turn Focus to Domestic and European Ambitions

Barcelona must now turn their attention to La Liga, where they hold a four-point advantage over Real Madrid, and to the Champions League, where they face Newcastle United in the last 16.

“The quality we saw today from the team is there — it’s unbelievable. I’m really proud of my team,” Flick concluded.

Despite their elimination, Barcelona’s spirited display underlined their credentials as serious contenders on multiple fronts, even if their Copa del Rey journey ended in heartbreak.
