Atlético Madrid have confirmed new contract extensions for long-serving duo Antoine Griezmann and Koke Resurrección. While both have long been pivotal figures at the club, they have gradually transitioned into more secondary roles in recent seasons.

Griezmann’s future had been the subject of considerable speculation during March and April as the Frenchman entered negotiations with Los Rojiblancos. The forward had been strongly linked with a move to Major League Soccer, a destination he has publicly expressed interest in for the twilight of his career. However, on Monday, Atlético Madrid announced that Griezmann has signed an extension to remain at the club until 2027 — a move which, according to Marca, will also provide financial benefits under the club’s salary cap regulations.

It is reported that the 33-year-old will continue to earn €8 million annually (his previous contract had been set to expire in 2026), though this figure will now be spread across two seasons.

Koke Also Signs One-Year Extension
Club captain Koke has also extended his stay, signing a one-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2026. The 33-year-old midfielder continues to build upon his club-record 681 appearances and maintains a rolling contract that allows him and the club to assess and agree on an extension annually.

Challenging Season for Griezmann
This past campaign has arguably been the most challenging of Griezmann’s Atlético career since his return from Barcelona. Despite starting strongly and forming a promising partnership with Julián Álvarez, the Frenchman’s form dipped noticeably as the season progressed.

Struggling for end product in front of goal during the latter half of the season, Griezmann eventually lost his place in the starting line-up during the closing weeks. He finished the season with 16 goals and nine assists across 53 appearances — a respectable tally, yet below the standards expected of the club’s all-time top scorer, who has now netted 197 goals for Atlético.

A New Role for Griezmann on the Horizon?
Looking ahead, questions remain about Griezmann’s role in the upcoming campaign. With Julián Álvarez expected to lead the line for Atlético, the FIFA Club World Cup could serve as an early indicator of how manager Diego Simeone plans to utilise Griezmann — and where Alexander Sørloth features in the attacking hierarchy.

While Koke has already assumed the role of an experienced option from the bench and a key figure in the dressing room, Griezmann may be preparing to follow a similar trajectory as the next phase of his career unfolds.
