Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for major silverware after defeating SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League Final in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Aston Villa End 30-Year Trophy Drought as Unai Emery Secures Historic Europa League Glory
The triumph delivered another historic milestone for manager Unai Emery, who extended his remarkable record in the Europa League by lifting the trophy for a fifth time — more than any manager in the competition’s history.
Among those celebrating passionately inside the Tupras Stadium was lifelong Villa supporter Prince William, who travelled to Turkey to witness his beloved club secure their first major honour since winning the League Cup in 1996.
The Prince of Wales later shared his delight on social media, congratulating the players, staff and supporters following an unforgettable night for the Midlands club.
Villa captain John McGinn revealed Prince William visited the dressing room before kick-off, describing him as a “classy guy” and a genuine supporter who was never going to miss such a historic occasion.
The victory also marked Aston Villa’s first European trophy since their glorious continental successes in 1982, when they won both the European Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Emery once again demonstrated why he is widely regarded as the master of Europe’s secondary competition. Having previously won the Europa League three consecutive times with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, and again with Villarreal in 2021, the Spaniard has now guided a third different club to Europa League glory.
“I am always very grateful for European competitions, especially the Europa League,” Emery said after the match. “We fought strongly throughout this campaign and approached every game seriously.”
Villa produced a dominant display from start to finish. Youri Tielemans opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a composed volley from Morgan Rogers’ delivery before Emiliano Buendía doubled the advantage deep into first-half stoppage time with a magnificent curling effort into the top corner.
Morgan Rogers completed the scoring in the second half, sliding in at the near post to convert another dangerous cross from Buendía and put the result beyond doubt.
For Freiburg, appearing in their first-ever European final, the occasion proved a step too far against a confident and clinical Villa side.
The achievement underlines the extraordinary transformation Emery has overseen since arriving at Villa Park in 2022. When he took charge, the club were hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone. Since then, he has guided Villa back into the Champions League and now delivered a major European trophy.
McGinn described the night as the proudest moment of his career, praising the unity, belief and progress built under Emery’s leadership.
“With this manager, anything feels possible,” the Scotland international said. “Everything we have worked for came together tonight.”
The triumph also provided personal redemption for Emery following his difficult spell with Arsenal, where he was dismissed in 2019 despite reaching the Europa League final during his tenure.
Now, with major trophies won in Spain, France and England, Emery has further cemented his reputation as one of modern football’s elite knockout competition specialists.
