Alty Women Suffer First League Defeat Of The Season

Altrincham Women suffered their first league defeat of the season after Rochdale Women secured a 2-1 victory in the North West Women's Regional Football League, Division One Central. Georgia McKnight's early equaliser was not enough as Erin Whyte's late goal settled the contest.

Altrincham Women suffered their first league defeat of the season after Rochdale Women edged them 2-1 in a closely contested encounter in the North West Women's Regional Football League, Division One Central.

The result ended Alty's perfect start to the campaign after they had won their opening three league fixtures. Rochdale also entered the contest with a 100 per cent record, making the meeting a clash between two unbeaten sides.

Rochdale Strike Inside The Opening Minute

Rochdale made the stronger start and needed just 22 seconds to take the lead.

Annie Taylor's cross from the right was not dealt with effectively by the Altrincham defence, allowing Eleanor Seals to produce an excellent finish and put the hosts ahead.

McKnight Quickly Restores Parity

Altrincham responded almost immediately.

Just two minutes after Rochdale's opener, Katie Locke carried the ball forward before finding Georgia McKnight, who struck towards the near post. Rochdale goalkeeper Leah Jackson got a hand to the effort but could only divert it into the top corner.

The quick response brought Alty level at 1-1 and gave them renewed confidence.

Rochdale Apply Second-Half Pressure

The hosts gradually regained control as the match progressed, enjoying more possession and creating several opportunities.

Altrincham goalkeeper Carmen Stephens was called upon repeatedly after the interval, making important saves to keep her side in contention. Brianna Morrison also produced a crucial goalline clearance as Rochdale continued to threaten.

Alty had their own opportunities, including a strong spell around the 70-minute mark, but they were unable to find a second goal.

Whyte Delivers Late Winner

Rochdale eventually found the decisive breakthrough in the 83rd minute.

Erin Whyte's effort found its way underneath Stephens and into the net, restoring Rochdale's lead with only seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Altrincham could not produce another equaliser before the final whistle, bringing their unbeaten league run to an end.

First League Setback For Alty

The defeat represents Altrincham Women's first league loss of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Robins had previously opened the season with three consecutive victories, beating Stockport County Development 1-0 before recording 3-2 wins against Wythenshawe Town Women and Bury FC Reserves.

Despite the setback, the opening weeks of the campaign had provided plenty of encouragement for Daryll Abrahams' side.

Alty Look Ahead

The defeat will now give Altrincham an opportunity to regroup after a difficult contest against another strong side.

Their next fixture will provide a chance to respond and rebuild momentum as the season continues. For Rochdale, meanwhile, the victory maintains their perfect start and underlines the competitiveness at the top of the division.
