AC Milan are exploring defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window, with two highly rated Spanish prospects emerging as targets — Gerard Martín of Barcelona and Real Madrid youngster Víctor Valdepeñas.

The Rossoneri are keen to strengthen their back line, particularly by adding a naturally left-footed centre-back. While both players fit the profile, Martín is expected to command a significantly higher transfer fee.
Martín a Costlier Option
Gerard Martín has already established himself within the Barcelona set-up, making 75 senior appearances. According to reports from Spain, Wolverhampton Wanderers submitted a €15 million bid for the defender last summer, which was rejected. Everton also made a late approach during the same transfer window but were similarly turned away.
Barcelona are understood to value Martín at approximately €25 million, with the club potentially open to sales involving non-regular starters in order to finance their own recruitment plans.
Interest in the defender is not limited to Italy, with several European sides monitoring his situation.
Valdepeñas Viewed as Long-Term Prospect
In contrast, a move for Víctor Valdepeñas would represent more of a developmental investment.
The 19-year-old centre-back is regarded as one of the brightest defensive prospects within the Real Madrid system. A regular for Real Madrid Castilla, he has already made one La Liga appearance and has earned five caps for Spain’s Under-19 side.
Reports suggest that clubs from Germany and England are also tracking his progress. Milan, however, are said to have a strong working relationship with the player’s representatives — who also manage Mario Gila — as well as with Real Madrid, following successful dealings involving Brahim Díaz and Alex Jiménez in recent years.
Strategic Considerations for Milan
While Milan are assessing options, the need for a left-footed defender is not necessarily urgent. Strahinja Pavlović has impressed and continues to show room for development. As such, the club could opt for a younger profile capable of learning and providing depth rather than immediately displacing established starters.
Alternatively, Milan may consider a more experienced but reliable defender willing to accept a rotational role.
More pressing decisions may lie elsewhere in defence, where the club must determine whether to invest heavily in a player capable of mounting serious competition for Fikayo Tomori and Matteo Gabbia.
With the summer window approaching, Milan’s recruitment strategy in defence is expected to become clearer as they balance immediate needs with long-term planning.
