Former defender Steve Nicol has suggested that Liverpool FC would start as second favourites if drawn against Atlético Madrid in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Steve Nicol Delivers Blunt Champions League Prediction as Liverpool Await Last-16 Draw
Arne Slot’s side will face either Atlético or Galatasaray SK in Friday’s draw, with the second leg set to take place at Anfield. The remaining team will meet Tottenham Hotspur, who finished fourth in the group-phase standings.
Atlético progressed after defeating Club Brugge KV, while Galatasaray overcame Juventus FC, despite nearly surrendering a three-goal advantage against the Italian side, who were reduced to ten men.
Nicol Questions Liverpool’s Depth
Although Liverpool have largely impressed in Europe this season — aside from a heavy 4–1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven — Nicol expressed reservations about their prospects against Diego Simeone’s experienced Atlético outfit.
“I’m trying hard to find a way to be really positive and say that it’s Liverpool [who would be favourites],” Nicol said while speaking on ESPN.
“Liverpool in Europe have been way better than they have in the Premier League, but I’d have to side with Atlético Madrid.
“Right now, Liverpool have got no bench. Atleti have got lots of options. Yes, they’ve been up and down, but overall it’s very difficult not to go with Atlético Madrid.”
Nicol’s assessment centres on squad depth, suggesting Atlético’s strength in reserve could prove decisive over two legs.
Leboeuf Offers Contrasting View
However, former France international Frank Leboeuf disagreed, arguing that Liverpool’s European performances this season give them a genuine edge.
“Liverpool have been better in the Champions League than Atlético Madrid — they’ve proved it in every game they’ve played,” Leboeuf said.
“I want to believe they’re going to get the spirit that they have every time they play a Champions League game.
“And from what I saw again from Atlético today, it’s possible and doable for Liverpool to go through.”
High-Stakes Draw Looms
With the draw imminent, Slot’s men face a potentially demanding tie regardless of the outcome. Atlético bring tactical discipline and knockout pedigree under Simeone, while Galatasaray have already demonstrated resilience and attacking threat in eliminating Juventus.
Liverpool’s European form has often contrasted with their domestic inconsistency, and the forthcoming tie could define the trajectory of their season.
For now, attention turns to Friday’s draw — where the Reds will discover whether Nicol’s cautious prediction proves justified.
