Luis Díaz struck twice and was later dismissed as Bayern Munich extended their flawless start to the season with a commanding 2–1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in a pulsating Champions League encounter at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening.
Luis Díaz Scores Twice as 10-Man Bayern Munich Defeat Champions League Holders PSG
The Colombian winger opened the scoring inside four minutes before capitalising on slack defending to double Bayern’s advantage just past the half-hour mark. However, his evening turned sour when he was shown a red card in first-half stoppage time for a reckless challenge on Achraf Hakimi, who was forced off the pitch in tears.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, Bayern held firm to secure their 16th consecutive win in all competitions, maintaining their perfect record under Vincent Kompany.
Díaz the Hero and Villain in Paris
Díaz’s brace set the tone early as Bayern punished PSG’s sluggish start. His first goal came after Michael Olise’s effort was parried by goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, allowing the former Liverpool man to fire home the rebound.
Bayern continued to threaten, and on 32 minutes Díaz robbed Marquinhos on the edge of the box before slotting calmly past Chevalier to make it 2–0. But moments before the interval, the winger’s mistimed challenge on Hakimi resulted in a straight red card after a VAR review, leaving Bayern a man short for the second half.
Hakimi, who is expected to captain Morocco at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, departed the field in visible distress — a worrying sight for both club and country.
PSG’s Fitness Woes Deepen
It proved a difficult evening for Luis Enrique’s men, who also lost Ousmane Dembélé to injury in the first half. The Ballon d’Or winner had only recently returned from a hamstring issue and was withdrawn as a precaution.
“We must remain cautious,” Luis Enrique told Canal Plus. “We’re trying to improve the physical condition of the players, but it’s not easy with so many fixtures. The schedule is relentless.”
PSG were already without Désiré Doué, last season’s standout performer in their Champions League final victory over Inter Milan. The French champions still sit comfortably in their group and remain on course for qualification despite the setback.
“We can’t predict the future,” added Luis Enrique. “We know we’ve got some tough fixtures ahead — starting with Tottenham.”
Resilient Bayern March On
Bayern’s victory, their fourth straight in the Champions League, sees them join Arsenal as the only clubs with a perfect 12 points from four matches.
“We know the Champions League isn’t won in November — otherwise PSG wouldn’t have lifted it last season,” Kompany remarked afterwards. “For now, it’s simply about reaching the next round, and tonight’s three points were very important.”
Even with Harry Kane unable to add to his 25 goals for club and country this season, Bayern showcased their depth and defensive resilience. PSG pulled one back through João Neves in the 74th minute after he converted Lee Kang-in’s deflected cross, but Bayern stood firm to close out the win.
The German champions, unbeaten since July, face Union Berlin next in the Bundesliga before meeting Arsenal in another heavyweight European clash later this month.
