Arsenal secured a dramatic 1–0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Kai Havertz in Lisbon.
Havertz Strikes Late as Arsenal Edge Sporting in Champions League Quarter-Final
Arriving at the Estádio José Alvalade on the back of disappointing domestic defeats, Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a resilient, if unconvincing, performance to gain a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in north London.
Sporting, buoyed by an impressive home record, created the clearer opportunities, with David Raya producing key saves to deny Maxi Araújo and Geny Catamo. Arsenal struggled to impose themselves for long periods, with captain Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard both unable to convert half-chances.
The visitors improved marginally after the interval, but it was not until stoppage time that the decisive moment arrived. Substitute Gabriel Martinelli delivered a precise pass over the defence, allowing Havertz to time his run perfectly before calmly finishing past Rui Silva.
The late winner hands Arsenal a slender advantage heading into the second leg, though a sharper performance will be required if they are to progress to the semi-finals and sustain their pursuit of a first UEFA Champions League title.
