Viktor Gyökeres has issued a rallying cry to a resurgent Arsenal squad, urging them to seize what he described as an “amazing opportunity” as they stand on the brink of reaching the Champions League final.
Gyökeres urges resurgent Arsenal to seize ‘amazing’ Champions League opportunity against Atlético Madrid
The Gunners are just one match away from securing a place in the showpiece for the first time in 20 years, as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever Champions League title.
They will host Atlético Madrid in the decisive second leg of their semi-final on Tuesday, with the tie delicately poised at 1-1. Gyökeres opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first leg in Spain, before Julián Álvarez equalised, also from the spot.
The Sweden international has since maintained his strong form, scoring twice in Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday. That performance took his season tally to 21 goals across all competitions, as the club also continues its push for a first Premier League title since 2004.
Speaking ahead of the second leg in north London, Gyökeres highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad.
“There is a good feeling in the dressing room,” he said. “We are all very excited for every game that is coming, so it is about preparing well and bringing that energy onto the pitch. We are in this position for a reason.
“We have done very well throughout the season, but now, with these games coming, we need to step up and get over the line. It has been incredible so far, but we have to deliver now.
“It’s amazing to play this game at home. We know what is at stake and we have an amazing opportunity to play a great match tomorrow and enjoy it with the fans. We have to perform on the pitch, and with their support it could be a special night.”
Since his £64 million move from Sporting Lisbon, Gyökeres initially scored three goals in his first 11 matches and then went 10 games without finding the net from open play.
However, he has since rediscovered his form, scoring five goals in his last eight appearances, including a brace against Fulham.
He added: “In football, it’s always about continuing to push on, no matter what happens. There are always challenges throughout the season and you have to respond in the right way.
“I’ve done it before and I want to do it again. Every player performs better with confidence.”
