Spanish police believe Liverpool player Diogo Jota was speeding when he and his brother, André Silva, died in a car crash in Spain. The Lamborghini they were in veered off the road after a tire burst and caught fire. Jota was reportedly heading to England by ferry due to a recent lung procedure. Their funeral was held in Portugal, and the tragedy has sparked widespread condolences.

Spanish police suspect Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was speeding at the time of the car crash that claimed his life and that of his brother last week.

Spain's Civil Guard stated on Tuesday that while the investigation into the crash, which occurred last Thursday, is still ongoing, preliminary findings suggest Jota was exceeding the speed limit. Authorities believe the Lamborghini veered off the road following a tire burst.

Previously, officials had not clarified whether it was Jota or his brother, André Silva, behind the wheel. However, on Tuesday, the Civil Guard reported it appeared Jota was driving at the time of the accident.

Both brothers died at the scene when the vehicle erupted in flames on a remote stretch of highway in the early hours of the morning. According to Portuguese media, Jota had been traveling to the northern Spanish city of Santander, intending to board a ferry to England to rejoin Liverpool. He had reportedly been advised against flying due to a recent medical procedure involving his lungs.

Their funeral took place in Portugal on Saturday.

Jota, aged 28, and Silva, aged 25, were discovered deceased near Zamora in northwestern Spain just after midnight on Thursday, following the crash and subsequent fire on a deserted section of highway. Their remains were repatriated to Portugal after family members completed the identification process. A wake was held for them on Friday.

Jota’s death occurred two weeks after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, during a vacation following a demanding season in which he played a crucial role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title. The couple had three children, the youngest of whom was born last year.

News of their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from the global football community and numerous Portuguese officials.
