Barcelona delivered a commanding performance to defeat Real Madrid 6–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday, placing one foot firmly in the semi-finals.
Barcelona Thrash Real Madrid 6–2 in Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final First Leg
Pere Romeu’s side, dominant in the competition in recent years, made a blistering start as Ewa Pajor and Esmee Brugts struck within the opening 13 minutes to hand the visitors early control.
Real Madrid responded through Linda Caicedo, who pulled a goal back for the hosts at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium. However, Barcelona swiftly restored their two-goal advantage, with Irene Paredes heading home from a corner shortly afterwards.
Barcelona maintained their superiority after the interval, as Pajor added her second of the evening before Vicky López extended the lead further. Caicedo netted again for Madrid to offer a glimmer of hope, but Alexia Putellas converted a late penalty to cap an emphatic victory for the Catalan side.
Speaking after the match, Putellas emphasised the team’s continued pursuit of improvement despite the convincing result.
“We know there are always aspects to improve, and that is what we are striving for — to get closer to excellence,” she told TV3.
“We are already looking forward to the return leg at Camp Nou with our supporters. There are still 90 minutes to play, but we are very pleased with today’s performance.”
Barcelona, who finished runners-up to Arsenal last season, are now unbeaten in their last 25 matches across all competitions. The three-time champions have reached five consecutive finals and are on the verge of securing an eighth successive semi-final appearance, despite the absence of injured three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí.
Putellas played a key role in the opening goal, setting up Pajor after a clever lofted pass from Patri Guijarro allowed her to square the ball for a simple finish into an empty net.
Brugts added the second when she met López’s looping cross, with Madrid goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line despite getting a touch.
Although Pajor missed a chance to extend the lead when she advanced on goal, Madrid capitalised moments later as Caicedo broke through Barcelona’s defence, rounded goalkeeper Cata Coll and finished confidently.
Madrid’s resurgence proved short-lived, however, as Paredes restored Barcelona’s advantage just two minutes later with a powerful header.
There was little respite for the hosts in the second half. Pajor struck again before the hour mark after being played through by 18-year-old midfielder Clara Serrajordi, while López added a fifth with a composed finish from Caroline Graham Hansen’s cut-back.
Barcelona’s dominance over their rivals continued, having now won all four meetings between the sides this season, scoring 16 goals compared to Madrid’s two.
Caicedo remained a bright spark for the hosts, curling in a superb effort from the edge of the box to score her second of the match. However, any hopes of a comeback were effectively extinguished when Putellas converted from the penalty spot late on after Hansen was brought down in the area.
Real Madrid, who are yet to reach the semi-finals of the competition, now face a daunting challenge in the return leg. They will need to secure only their second-ever victory over Barcelona, who have won 22 of the 23 encounters between the two sides.
Reflecting on the result, Barcelona’s Patri Guijarro acknowledged minor defensive lapses but praised the overall performance.
“Their two goals could have been avoided, but we must be happy, proud and satisfied with what we produced in this match,” she said.
“We will now look to replicate this performance in the second leg.”
