WHO Addresses Rise in hMPV Cases in China Amid Increased Global Surveillance
The reported rise in Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) cases in China aligns with the typical seasonal trends of common respiratory illnesses, such as influenza, which are known to peak during the winter months, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The virus's spread in China has led several countries, including Nigeria and South Africa, to step up surveillance efforts at major international airports.
However, the WHO emphasized that the detection of acute respiratory infections and related pathogens is anticipated during this season and should not be cause for unnecessary concern.
"hMPV is a widely circulating respiratory virus found in many countries, especially during the winter through to spring months. However, not all countries routinely monitor and release data on hMPV trends," the global health organization noted.
"While some individuals may be hospitalized with bronchitis or pneumonia, the majority of people infected with hMPV experience mild upper respiratory symptoms akin to the common cold and recover within a few days," the WHO added.
The organization recommended adhering to standard precautions to limit the spread of respiratory pathogens, particularly among vulnerable populations during the winter season.
"Individuals with mild symptoms should remain at home to prevent spreading the virus and allow time for rest. People at higher risk or with complicated or severe symptoms should seek medical care promptly," the WHO statement suggested.
Additionally, the organization underscored the importance of preventive practices, such as wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the elbow, and regularly washing hands.
National Responses
On Monday, Nigerian media reported that the federal government was enhancing surveillance measures at major international airports in response to the hMPV cases in China.
Likewise, South Africa has stated that it is monitoring the situation but considers hMPV to be one of the usual seasonal respiratory viruses and sees no immediate cause for concern.
The WHO clarified that, at present, influenza is the most commonly detected respiratory pathogen in China among individuals with acute respiratory infections.
