Jacob Stockdale has been ruled out of Ireland’s upcoming Test match against Portugal due to a shoulder injury sustained during Saturday’s victory over Georgia.

The Ulster winger was forced off after 36 minutes following an awkward fall on his shoulder, and was replaced by Munster’s Calvin Nash. Stockdale has since returned to Ireland and is expected to see a specialist next week, with damage to the AC joint suspected.

Ireland’s interim head coach Paul O’Connell expressed disappointment at Stockdale’s latest setback, having praised the 28-year-old’s performance prior to the injury. The incident marks a continuation of Stockdale’s recent misfortune in the national side, being the third consecutive Test match in which he has picked up an injury.

Calvin Nash and Connacht’s Shayne Bolton are among the options being considered by O’Connell to fill the vacancy on the wing ahead of this weekend’s clash.

Meanwhile, Ulster prop Scott Wilson, who had been called up as injury cover ahead of the Georgia fixture, has also returned home, with his services no longer required for the Portugal match.

There was positive news elsewhere for the Irish camp, as Connacht back-row Cian Prendergast has recovered from illness and is available for selection.

Aside from Stockdale’s absence, there are no further injury concerns in the Ireland squad ahead of Saturday’s Test match, which kicks off at 7pm at the Estádio Nacional do Jamor in Lisbon.
