British YouTuber Yung Filly, aged 29, has been charged with rape following an alleged assault on a woman.
British YouTuber Yung Filly charged with rape after allegedly 'strangling woman' during Australian tour
The rapper, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was arrested in Brisbane on Tuesday while touring Australia. The police later transported him to Perth on Wednesday for a court hearing, as the alleged incident occurred there after a performance.
Filly, who has 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube and 3.3 million followers on Instagram, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her twenties at his hotel in Perth on 28th September.
The alleged incident is reported to have taken place after a performance at Bar1 Nightclub in the suburb of Hillarys on the night of 27th September. Western Australia Police's Sexual Assault Squad charged Filly with four counts of sexual penetration without consent.
He was also charged with three counts of assault and one count of obstructing a person's breathing or circulation by applying pressure to their neck. He appeared at Perth Magistrates' Court on Thursday, where his bail application was deferred until later in the day.
According to ABC Australia, the British entertainer is being represented by Perth barrister Seamus Rafferty SC. The publication reported that Rafferty commented on the bail being denied, saying: "This has already made headlines. Given the nature of social media, and how quickly people jump on bandwagons, along with the power imbalance between the parties."
Footage of the rapper, who recently featured on Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off, performing at Perth’s Bar1 Nightclub was posted to TikTok by the venue. The energetic show saw a large crowd rapping along to Filly’s songs. Images of the woman's injuries were also submitted to the magistrate. "No ordinary person can consent under those circumstances," the prosecutor said in reference to the images, adding: "The marks across her body demonstrate a history of violent acts... we assert that these photos and the allegations go far beyond what could be considered consensual."
In court, Filly’s barrister revealed that his client earns $700,000 AUD (£360,000) annually from social media alone. Filly, who has over three million followers on Instagram and nearly two million subscribers on YouTube, began his digital career in 2013 and later ventured into the music scene in 2017.
Filly has gained popularity as a core member of the Beta Squad and for his collaborations with the Sidemen. His career has also expanded due to his television appearances and presenting roles. He has appeared as the host of the BBC’s Hot Property and his own show, Yung Filly’s Celeb Lock-In.
