Severe floods in Maiduguri, Nigeria, have displaced two million people, causing extensive damage and prompting aid distribution efforts.

According to AFP, approximately two million people remain displaced in Nigeria’s northeastern Maiduguri city, several days after severe floods hit the region. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, reported on Friday that the victims of the floods, which occurred on September 10-11, continue to reside in camps set up by the government following the disaster.

"Most of our people are still displaced, and many infrastructures have been damaged by the flood," Zulum stated during a meeting with officials at a Nigerian bank that recently contributed N1 billion (around $600 million) to aid in the rehabilitation of infrastructure destroyed by the floods and to assist in the resettlement of the affected individuals.

Zulum assured that all donations made to the relief fund would be utilized for the benefit of those affected and would not be misappropriated by officials.

Since the catastrophic floods, which resulted in at least 40 fatalities, thousands of people have sought refuge in various locations, including open areas, religious centers, and 32 displaced persons camps, which encompass public schools.

Local authorities have begun the process of distributing money, food, and non-food items to individuals in the camps as well as to those who have found shelter in safer locations.

Bulana Abiso, the head of a coalition of civil society organizations, informed Anadolu that economic activities in the city have yet to resume days after the disaster. He noted that many victims are still experiencing shock and are struggling to cope with the trauma resulting from their losses and displacement.

Support for the victims has come from various institutions and individuals, including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, who have made financial contributions to assist those affected by the flooding.
