US broadcast news pioneer and CNN founder Ted Turner has passed away, according to an announcement made by the cable news network on Wednesday, marking the end of an era in global journalism and television broadcasting.
Turner, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern media history, revolutionized the news industry when he launched CNN in 1980. The network became the world’s first 24-hour television news channel and permanently changed how audiences in the United States and across the globe consumed news. His innovation introduced continuous breaking news coverage, reshaping the television industry and setting the standard for modern broadcast journalism.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, as Robert Edward “Ted” Turner III, he never completed his education at Brown University after being expelled before graduation. Despite the setback, Turner went on to build one of the largest media empires in the world.
Following the death of his father, who reportedly took his own life amid financial struggles, Turner assumed control of the family advertising business. He later expanded into broadcasting by purchasing several radio stations before entering the television industry in 1970 with the acquisition of a struggling Atlanta-based television station.
Turner’s frustration with traditional television news scheduling reportedly inspired the creation of CNN. He once explained that evening news programs aired at times that were inconvenient for working people — either before they arrived home from work or too late at night. This motivated him to create a network that would provide news coverage around the clock.
Reflecting on the launch of CNN during a 2016 interview with the Academy of Achievement, Turner said he moved quickly to establish the network before traditional broadcasters could respond. He argued that major television networks had the opportunity to create such a system but lacked the imagination to do so.
CNN achieved worldwide prominence during the 1991 Gulf War between the United States and Iraq. While many journalists evacuated Baghdad ahead of expected military strikes, CNN reporters remained in the Iraqi capital and delivered live coverage of the war as it unfolded. The network broadcast dramatic images of anti-aircraft fire lighting up the night sky and correspondents reporting amid explosions, becoming the first television network to air live coverage of the outbreak of a war.
The success of CNN’s nonstop news model inspired the launch of numerous competing 24-hour news networks, including Fox News, founded by Turner’s longtime rival Rupert Murdoch, as well as MSNBC and several international news channels.
Beyond CNN, Turner expanded his television empire to include entertainment and sports channels such as TBS and TNT, along with Turner Classic Movies and Cartoon Network. His influence extended far beyond broadcasting into sports ownership, environmental conservation, and philanthropy.
After selling CNN to Time Warner, Turner became known as one of America’s most prominent business leaders and philanthropists. He invested heavily in sports franchises, supported habitat restoration projects in the American mountain West, and donated approximately $1 billion to United Nations-related charitable causes.
Although no official cause of death was announced, Turner had been battling Lewy body dementia, a neurodegenerative disease, since 2018.
US President Donald Trump paid tribute to Turner following news of his death. In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump described Turner as “one of the Greats of All Time” and praised his impact on broadcasting history. Trump also referred to Turner as a friend who was always willing to support worthy causes.
Ted Turner’s legacy remains deeply tied to the transformation of modern television journalism, with CNN’s creation widely viewed as one of the most significant developments in global media history.
