President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as the new Minister of Defence following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. Musa, a highly experienced senior officer with a long record of military service and leadership in key operations, is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s security efforts. The nomination has been sent to the Senate for confirmation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put forward the nomination of General Christopher Gwabin Musa to serve as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. The President communicated this development in a formal letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, where he confirmed that General Musa had been selected to replace Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who tendered his resignation on Monday. Tinubu’s letter emphasized his confidence in General Musa’s professional capacity and leadership qualities, noting that his wealth of experience would play a crucial role in consolidating ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s security framework.

General Musa, who will turn 58 on December 25, is a highly regarded senior military officer recognized for decades of service in the Nigerian Army. He previously held the position of Chief of Defence Staff, a role he assumed in 2023 and occupied until October 2025. His distinguished service record includes receiving the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012, an honour that underscored his dedication, discipline, and contributions to national defence.

Born in Sokoto State in 1967, General Musa began his education in the same region, completing both primary and secondary school there. He later proceeded to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria, where he successfully completed his studies in 1986. That same year, he gained admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), marking the beginning of his formal military career. He graduated from the NDA in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a Second Lieutenant.

Over the years, General Musa built an impressive and steady rise through the military ranks. His early appointments included serving as General Staff Officer 1 in charge of Training and Operations at Headquarters 81 Division. He later became the Commanding Officer of the 73 Battalion, demonstrating strong leadership in operational environments. He also worked as Assistant Director for Operational Requirements in the Department of Army Policy and Plans, where he contributed to strategic planning and policy development. Additionally, he served as the Infantry Representative and a member of the Training Team at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Armour Corps.

General Musa’s operational experience further expanded in 2019, when he served in several key roles, including Deputy Chief of Staff for Training and Operations at the Infantry Centre and Corps Headquarters. He also commanded Sector 3 of Operation Lafiya Dole, Nigeria’s counterinsurgency campaign against Boko Haram and other extremist groups. In the same period, he was appointed Commander of Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region, working with troops from neighbouring countries in a combined effort to combat terrorism.

In 2021, his expertise earned him the position of Theatre Commander for Operation Hadin Kai, the major military operation in the northeast aimed at stabilizing and securing the region. His leadership in this role was widely acknowledged, and he was later appointed Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. His reputation for discipline, strategic thinking and operational excellence eventually led to his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff by President Tinubu in 2023, making him the highest-ranking military officer in the country at the time.

In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu expressed optimism that General Musa’s extensive experience, both in strategic leadership and in field operations, would significantly enhance the performance of the Ministry of Defence. The President reiterated that Musa’s decades of military service, combined with his demonstrated commitment to national stability, made him an ideal candidate to oversee Nigeria’s defence policies at a time when the country continues to confront evolving security challenges.

The nomination has now been forwarded to the Senate for consideration and confirmation in accordance with constitutional procedure. The announcement has generated public interest due to General Musa’s long-standing involvement in national security efforts and his reputation as a disciplined and capable officer.
