South African police have arrested five people after uncovering a suspected industrial-scale crystal meth laboratory on a farm in Limpopo. Drugs and laboratory equipment worth more than $37 million were seized, along with cash. The suspects include two Mexicans, two Zimbabweans and one Malawian. The bust has heightened concerns over the possible expansion of Latin American drug cartels into Africa, with investigators examining links to wider organised-crime networks.

South African police have arrested five people accused of operating a sophisticated crystal methamphetamine manufacturing facility on a farm in Limpopo province, near the country's border with Zimbabwe.
Police said drugs and laboratory equipment seized during the overnight raid had an estimated street value of more than $37 million. An undisclosed amount of cash was also recovered.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 47, include two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabweans and one Malawian.

POLICE UNCOVER INDUSTRIAL-SCALE OPERATION

Authorities described the facility as an alleged industrial-scale drug manufacturing operation believed to have been established to produce dangerous illicit substances for distribution.
The discovery has intensified concerns about the growth of large-scale drug production in South Africa and possible connections to international criminal organisations.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrates Court on Monday, where they will face charges related to the manufacture and possession of illicit drugs.

MEXICAN NATIONALS RAISE CARTEL CONCERNS

The latest arrests come after a series of major drug busts in South Africa involving Mexican nationals.
The repeated involvement of Mexican suspects has raised concerns among investigators that Latin American drug-trafficking organisations could be expanding their operations into Africa, potentially working with local criminal groups.
Limpopo's head of the Hawks, South Africa's priority-crime investigation unit, said the latest operation should serve as a warning to organised criminal networks that law-enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts against large-scale drug production.

SOUTH AFRICA AT CENTRE OF GROWING METH MARKET

South Africa is a significant consumer market for methamphetamine, while demand for the drug is also growing in neighbouring countries, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
In a 2025 report, the organisation said drug laboratories in South Africa and Mozambique were examples of the expansion of Latin American criminal networks into Africa and their cooperation with local criminal groups.
The latest seizure therefore goes beyond a single laboratory raid, as authorities investigate whether the Limpopo operation was part of a wider regional trafficking network.

AUTHORITIES TARGET INTERNATIONAL DRUG NETWORKS

The investigation is expected to focus on the people financing the operation, the source of its equipment and chemicals, the intended distribution routes and any links to criminal organisations outside South Africa.
The case also highlights the growing challenge faced by South African authorities as sophisticated drug-production facilities emerge in rural areas.
With the five suspects due in court, investigators will now seek to establish the full scale of the operation and identify other people who may have been involved.
