At least four people have been killed after a Russian soldier allegedly went on a shooting rampage in Russian-controlled Crimea, killing a fellow serviceman before opening fire on civilians in a nearby village.
According to Moscow-installed Crimean governor Mikhail Razvozhayev, the incident began when the soldier opened fire on fellow military personnel, killing one serviceman and critically injuring another.
The gunman then moved into the village of Khmelnytske, where he allegedly shot dead three civilians—two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64-year-old woman.
Three other people were injured and taken to hospital, where doctors continue to treat them.
Authorities said the suspect has been arrested and remains in custody while investigators work to establish the motive behind the attack.
Officials have not disclosed the soldier's identity or the military unit in which he served.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Razvozhayev urged residents not to spread speculation regarding the attacker's motives or identity, saying only official information should be relied upon during the investigation.
Authorities have not indicated whether the suspect had any known disciplinary or mental health history.
The condition of several injured victims remains unclear, raising concerns that the death toll could increase.

INCIDENT FOLLOWS OTHER SHOOTINGS INVOLVING RUSSIAN TROOPS

Although shootings involving Russian military personnel remain relatively uncommon, several deadly incidents have occurred since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
One of the most notable occurred in October 2022, when two gunmen attacked a Russian military training ground in Belgorod, killing 11 soldiers and injuring many others before security forces shot the attackers dead.
There have also been isolated reports of violent incidents involving Russian servicemen in occupied Ukrainian territories and inside Russia, prompting concerns about combat stress, discipline and the psychological toll of the prolonged conflict.

CRIMEA REMAINS A MAJOR MILITARY TARGET

The shooting comes as security remains tense across Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014 following a referendum widely rejected by Ukraine and most of the international community.
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the peninsula has become one of Moscow's most important military hubs.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Russian military facilities in Crimea using long-range missiles and drones, striking naval bases, airfields, logistics centres and ammunition depots.
While authorities have not linked the latest shooting to the ongoing conflict, analysts say the sustained military pressure and prolonged war have increased security concerns across the peninsula.

INTERNATIONAL STATUS REMAINS DISPUTED

Russia considers Crimea part of its territory, but Ukraine and the majority of the international community continue to recognise the peninsula as sovereign Ukrainian territory under Russian occupation.
The latest shooting adds to growing security challenges in the region as the war enters another year with no immediate prospect of a negotiated settlement.
