The incident occurred on Sunday in Jigawa State as the boat was transporting passengers across a river. Authorities said women and children were among those travelling when the vessel overturned.

PASSENGERS THROWN INTO THE RIVER

According to the police, the boat was carrying about 40 passengers when it capsized while crossing the river.
The accident immediately triggered a large-scale rescue operation involving emergency officials, local divers and community volunteers.
By Monday afternoon, police said 23 passengers had been rescued alive, while about 12 people were still missing.
Police spokesperson Shi'isu Adam confirmed that one body was recovered on Sunday, with five additional bodies found during rescue efforts on Monday.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also confirmed at least five deaths, noting that rescue teams were still searching for those unaccounted for.

SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS CONTINUES

NEMA spokesperson Nura Abdullahi said rescue operations remain active as officials work to locate the remaining passengers.
Families of those believed to have been on board have gathered near the accident scene awaiting news of their loved ones.
Authorities said the final casualty figure will only be confirmed after all missing passengers have been accounted for.

Following previous tragedies, both the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and NEMA have repeatedly urged boat operators to avoid overloading vessels, ensure regular maintenance and provide passengers with life jackets before departure.
Despite these safety campaigns, compliance remains inconsistent in many parts of the country.

Safety experts say preventing future accidents will require stronger regulation of inland waterways, improved monitoring of commercial boats and greater public awareness of safety requirements.
