Scientists have discovered a new dinosaur species, Musango matusadonaensis, in northern Zimbabwe, providing fresh evidence that southern Africa once had diverse ecosystems supporting different dinosaur species. The 4.5-metre-long dinosaur lived about 210 million years ago and is the fifth dinosaur species identified in Zimbabwe. The discovery follows the 2022 identification of Mbiresaurus raathi, Africa's oldest known dinosaur.

The newly identified species, named Musango matusadonaensis, was discovered from a fossil skeleton excavated in 2018 along the shores of Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe.
The discovery makes Musango the fifth dinosaur species to be identified in Zimbabwe and provides scientists with a rare opportunity to study dinosaur life during the Late Triassic period, around 210 million years ago.

A SMALLER DINOSAUR FROM THE TRIASSIC PERIOD

Musango lived at a time when dinosaurs were still in the early stages of their evolution and had not yet become the dominant land animals.
Unlike the enormous long-necked dinosaurs that appeared millions of years later, Musango was relatively small and lightly built.
Researchers estimate that the dinosaur was approximately 4.5 metres (15 feet) long and weighed around 222 kilogrammes (490 pounds), roughly the weight of a fully grown pig.
Its name comes from the Shona word "musango", meaning "living in the bush".
Scientists believe the dinosaur may have lived near rivers and streams, where it likely fed on vegetation. Although its skull has not been discovered, researchers believe it was probably a herbivore or an omnivore.

DISCOVERY CHALLENGES OLD ASSUMPTIONS

The discovery is significant because scientists previously believed that dinosaur species living across southern Africa during the Late Triassic period were largely similar.
However, the Musango fossil suggests that different parts of the region may have supported distinct ecosystems, with different dinosaur species adapting to their individual environments.
Paul Barrett, a researcher at the Natural History Museum in London and part of the international team behind the discovery, said the findings indicate that scientists may have uncovered only a small part of the region's prehistoric biodiversity.
The researchers published their findings in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.

ONE OF ZIMBABWE'S MOST COMPLETE DINOSAUR FOSSILS

The fossilised remains of Musango are particularly valuable because they represent one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons of its age ever found in Zimbabwe.
The preserved bones include parts of the spine, ribs, arms, legs and feet, allowing researchers to build a clearer picture of the dinosaur's size and physical development.
Scientists estimate that Musango was around eight years old and almost fully grown when it died.
The bones also contained evidence that the animal had survived a serious injury or infection before its death, offering researchers a rare glimpse into the health challenges faced by dinosaurs millions of years ago.

ZIMBABWE'S GROWING IMPORTANCE IN DINOSAUR RESEARCH

The latest discovery adds to Zimbabwe's growing importance in the study of Africa's prehistoric past.
In 2022, scientists announced the discovery of Mbiresaurus raathi, described as Africa's oldest known dinosaur.
The small dinosaur lived around 230 million years ago and stood approximately one metre tall. It had a long tail and weighed up to about 30 kilogrammes.
The discovery of Musango, millions of years younger than Mbiresaurus, suggests that Zimbabwe's fossil record could contain many more clues about how dinosaurs evolved and spread across the continent.

Scientists say the discovery highlights the importance of continued fossil research across southern Africa.
The region's prehistoric landscapes were likely far more diverse than previously understood, with rivers, forests and other habitats supporting different species at different times.
