The battle for Anefis began after Al Qaeda-linked fighters and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) captured the town on 4 July during a series of coordinated attacks across northern Mali.
Although the armed groups succeeded in taking control of the town, they failed to capture a nearby military base.
A group of Malian soldiers, supported by Russian paramilitary fighters from the Africa Corps, remained inside the military camp and defended their position until additional troops arrived.
After receiving reinforcements, the Malian army launched a counteroffensive that eventually forced the attackers out of the town.

HEAVY LOSSES ON BOTH SIDES

General Dao described the fallen soldiers as martyrs who sacrificed their lives while defending the country.
He said approximately 30 troops were killed and about 60 others were wounded during the operation.
