David Mabuza, South Africa's former deputy president and key ANC figure, has died at 64, with tributes highlighting his political influence and role in the country's democratic transition.

David Mabuza, South Africa’s former deputy president and a prominent figure within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), has died at the age of 64, the party confirmed on Thursday.

Mabuza, who served as deputy president of the country from 2018 to 2023 under President Cyril Ramaphosa, was widely regarded as a skilled political strategist and played a pivotal role in helping Ramaphosa secure leadership of the ANC during the party’s elective conference in 2017.

A seasoned politician, Mabuza previously served as the Premier of Mpumalanga province, where he built a strong political base and earned a reputation as a formidable organiser within the ANC’s internal structures. Often described as a powerbroker behind the scenes, he was credited with uniting key factions within the party during a period of significant political tension.

In a statement, the ANC paid tribute to Mabuza as “a lifelong servant of the people and a committed leader in South Africa’s democratic journey,” highlighting his contributions to the country’s post-apartheid transformation.

While the exact cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, local media outlets reported that he passed away in hospital. Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Mabuza’s political career was not without controversy. He faced persistent allegations of corruption and patronage during his tenure in Mpumalanga—accusations he consistently denied. Nevertheless, he remained an influential figure within the ANC and national politics until his resignation from government in 2023.

His death has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, with many acknowledging his role in shaping South Africa’s contemporary political landscape.

Mabuza is survived by his wife and children.
