Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead in Battersea, south London, days after resigning from the university amid scrutiny over allegations concerning his academic work and qualifications.
The Metropolitan Police said a man was found unresponsive in Battersea on Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the death was unexpected but was not believed to be suspicious. Arday’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

ARDAY RESIGNED FROM CAMBRIDGE

Arday, a professor of sociology of education at Cambridge, resigned just over a week before his death as questions surrounding his academic credentials intensified.
He had faced allegations that parts of his PhD thesis contained material similar to previously published work and that he had overstated aspects of his personal achievements.
Arday denied wrongdoing.
In his resignation letter, he said he did not accept what he described as the narratives that had surrounded him, while acknowledging that the continuing accusations and public commentary had taken a serious toll on him and those close to him.

CAMBRIDGE HAD LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION

Cambridge initially defended Arday after earlier plagiarism allegations were investigated by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his doctorate.
However, the university later announced a new investigation after receiving what it described as new information concerning Arday’s qualifications and honorary appointments.

QUESTIONS OVER ACADEMIC CLAIMS

The controversy intensified after similarities were reported between sections of Arday’s 2015 doctoral thesis and an earlier academic paper.

Arday had said he helped raise £5.5 million through endurance challenges over a period of two decades. He later explained that the amount had been raised collectively rather than solely through his individual efforts.

More than two dozen academics and political figures reportedly characterized the accusations as a smear campaign and defended his position as one of the prominent Black academics to hold an influential role in British higher education.
