MORE THAN 270,000 PASSENGERS AFFECTED

More than 270,000 passengers have been affected after volcanic ash from Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau disrupted air travel across the country, forcing airports to suspend operations and leaving thousands of travellers stranded.
Indonesia’s Transport Ministry said that, as of Monday morning, about 2,300 flights had been affected since September 5. The figure includes flights cancelled, delayed or diverted because of the volcanic ash.

ASH CLOUDS SPREAD ACROSS JAVA AND SUMATRA

Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, began a sustained eruption late Friday.
The volcano produced spectacular lava fountains and sent clouds of ash into the atmosphere. Indonesia’s meteorological agency, BMKG, reported ash at heights of about 6,000 metres over the Java side and up to 15,000 metres over Sumatra and parts of Banten.
The latest eruptions have continued to create uncertainty for aviation authorities because volcanic ash can severely damage aircraft engines, reduce visibility and interfere with flight operations.
Indonesia’s Geological Agency has warned that the possibility of further eruptions remains high.

JAKARTA AIRPORT EXTENDS CLOSURE

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, more than 150 kilometres from Anak Krakatau, extended its temporary closure after volcanic ash was detected in its airspace.
Several other airports have also experienced temporary closures or operational restrictions as authorities monitor the movement of the ash cloud.
Indonesia’s Transport Ministry said the decision to suspend operations was based on flight-safety considerations and would continue to be adjusted according to the latest ash-distribution and aviation-safety information.

STRANDED PASSENGERS SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVES

The disruption has left departure halls crowded as passengers wait for information, seek refunds and try to find alternative ways to reach their destinations.
Some travellers have turned to trains and other forms of transport after repeated flight cancellations.
For international visitors, the uncertainty has also meant unexpected hotel costs and changes to travel plans.

SCHOOLS MOVE CLASSES ONLINE

The eruption has affected more than aviation.
Schools in affected areas have moved some classes online as a precaution against exposure to volcanic ash.
Residents have also been advised to protect themselves from ash, particularly because fine volcanic particles can irritate the eyes and respiratory system.

SHIPPING ALSO AFFECTED

The Sunda Strait is an important shipping route between Java and Sumatra, meaning volcanic activity also creates concerns for maritime traffic.
Authorities have prohibited ships from entering a 3-kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano and have urged vessels passing through the area to exercise caution.
Despite the disruption, authorities have said there is no current tsunami warning linked to the latest eruption.

ANAK KRAKATAU HAS A DANGEROUS HISTORY

Anak Krakatau means “Child of Krakatoa.”
The volcano emerged from the sea in the 1920s inside the enormous caldera left by the catastrophic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa.
Anak Krakatau has remained intermittently active ever since.
Its most notorious recent event occurred in December 2018, when part of the volcano collapsed into the sea. The resulting tsunami struck coastal communities on Java and Sumatra, killing more than 400 people and injuring thousands.
Scientists later determined that large sections of the volcano had collapsed into the sea, triggering the tsunami.

AUTHORITIES MONITOR FOR A NEW ESCALATION

Indonesia is closely monitoring Anak Krakatau because volcanic activity can change rapidly.
Authorities have warned people not to approach the volcano within the designated exclusion zone, while aviation officials are repeatedly testing for the presence of ash around affected airports.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said authorities were unable to predict exactly when the airport closures would end because weather conditions were constantly changing.
The government has also stressed that passenger safety remains the priority.
