Algerians gather to witness rare solar eclipse near totality

Large crowds gathered along the beach in Tenes, northern Algeria, on Wednesday night to witness a rare partial solar eclipse that covered almost 98 per cent of the Sun.
Spectators used special protective glasses as the Moon moved across the face of the Sun, leaving only a thin crescent of sunlight visible.
The event attracted families, astronomy enthusiasts and children eager to experience the astronomical phenomenon.

TENES NEAR PATH OF TOTALITY

Physicist and astronomy association member Chaima Amin Khouja explained that although Algeria was in the partial-eclipse zone, Tenes was close to the path of totality.
She said the location allowed observers to experience an eclipse that was almost 98 per cent total.
For many spectators, the experience offered a rare opportunity to observe a major astronomical event directly.
Shopkeeper Ibrahim Boussemaha described it as his first time witnessing an eclipse in person, calling the experience striking and exciting.

CHILDREN JOIN ASTRONOMY VIEWING

In Zeralda, outside the capital Algiers, Algeria's Ministry of Youth provided special viewing equipment for more than 2,000 children, including members of astronomy clubs.
The initiative was designed to encourage young people to develop an interest in science, astronomy and technology.
Teacher Rabiaa Rym welcomed the provision of protective glasses, saying it allowed children and other members of the public to safely enjoy the event.

PREPARING FOR A TOTAL ECLIPSE

The eclipse also generated excitement ahead of another major astronomical event expected in Algeria next year.
Parts of the country are expected to experience a total solar eclipse, during which the Moon will completely block the Sun and plunge affected areas into darkness for more than five minutes.
The upcoming event is expected to attract even greater interest from scientists, astronomy enthusiasts and the general public.
For Algeria, Wednesday's eclipse provided both a spectacular public event and an opportunity to encourage greater interest in science among younger generations.
