36 Dead, Dozens Injured in Stampede at Vijay’s Political Rally in Tamil Nadu

At least 36 people have been confirmed dead and more than 50 others have been injured after a massive stampede broke out during a political campaign rally in southern India, according to reports from lawmakers and local authorities. The tragedy unfolded in the city of Karur, located in Tamil Nadu state, where a large crowd had gathered for an event organized by Vijay, a hugely popular film actor who has successfully transitioned into politics in recent years. Vijay was hosting the rally on behalf of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, which he founded to contest elections and broaden his political influence.
Local media reports revealed that the victims included at least eight children, underscoring the scale of the disaster and the vulnerability of those caught in the chaotic situation. Witnesses explained that a crowd of nearly 30,000 people had assembled at the venue, waiting anxiously to hear Vijay deliver a speech. However, the actor-turned-politician was reportedly several hours late to take the stage, and this delay led to growing restlessness among the attendees. As the crowd swelled in number and became increasingly impatient, reports emerged that some people attempted to move closer to Vijay’s bus, sparking sudden panic and uncontrollable pushing that quickly escalated into a deadly stampede.
Those present described heart-wrenching scenes of people being pushed to the ground, many fainting in the heat and commotion, while others lost consciousness as the crush intensified. Despite efforts by security and emergency responders, the sheer size of the crowd made it difficult to restore order in time to prevent heavy casualties.
In response to the tragedy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a statement describing the event as “deeply saddening” and extended his solidarity to the grieving families. “My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time,” Modi said, emphasizing the need for compassion and support during such a devastating loss.
Vijay himself expressed sorrow and devastation at the loss of life. Quoted by the Hindustan Times, he said, “My heart is shattered… I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.” His comments highlighted both his personal grief and the responsibility he now carries as both a public figure and a political leader.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced the establishment of a commission of inquiry, to be headed by a retired judge, in order to investigate the causes of the stampede and identify lapses in crowd management. He also pledged financial compensation of one million rupees, equivalent to around €9,700 or $11,200, to be given to the families of the deceased, while promising additional support to those who were injured.
Unfortunately, this tragedy is not an isolated occurrence, as deadly stampedes have happened on several occasions in India, often during large public or religious gatherings where crowd control becomes difficult. Earlier in January, 30 people were killed in a stampede while attempting to reach the banks of a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival. In July 2024, another incident of mass panic at a Hindu religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh claimed the lives of 121 people. These recurring disasters highlight the urgent need for stronger crowd management strategies, better safety protocols, and timely interventions to protect lives during events that draw massive gatherings.
The Karur tragedy now stands as a grim reminder of the risks associated with large-scale rallies and festivals in India, emphasizing the importance of both political leaders and authorities ensuring that the enthusiasm of supporters and devotees does not come at the cost of preventable loss of life.
