Two Killed, Nine Injured As Car Rams Crowd In French City Of Caen

Two people were killed and nine others injured after a car deliberately drove into a group of pedestrians near a railway station in Caen, northern France. A 26-year-old Russian-born man was arrested about 20 kilometres away. At least two people have been killed and nine others injured after a car was deliberately driven into a group of pedestrians in the northwestern French city of Caen, authorities said.
Six of the injured victims were reported to be in life-threatening condition following the incident near the city's main railway station late Wednesday.
French authorities have not identified a terrorist motive, saying the investigation is still in its early stages.

DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER FLEEING

The incident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. near a bus or tram stop opposite Caen's railway station.
A 26-year-old man born in Russia allegedly drove into the group before fleeing the scene. He was later arrested in Ouistreham, around 20 kilometres from Caen.
The suspect was previously known to police for traffic offences but was not known to French intelligence services. Prosecutors said the investigation is being conducted for serious violent offences, while the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being established.

ALTERCATION MAY HAVE PRECEDED THE INCIDENT

Initial reports indicate that an altercation may have taken place near a bar shortly before the vehicle struck the pedestrians.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he had been the victim of violence before the incident, although prosecutors stressed that his account would have to be carefully verified.
Authorities have therefore focused on establishing whether the vehicle attack was connected to the earlier dispute and whether it was deliberately intended to harm those gathered outside.
Deputy prosecutor Philippe Leonardo said authorities were not currently assuming a terrorist motive.
“At this point we are not assuming a terrorist motive, but the investigation has only just begun.”

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the crash, treating the injured and securing the area around the railway station.
The initial death toll was lower, but authorities later confirmed that a second victim had died after being taken to hospital.
The incident has shocked residents in Caen, while investigators continue to examine witness accounts, surveillance footage and other evidence.

A SIMILAR INCIDENT IN ÉVREUX

The Caen incident comes almost exactly one year after a similar vehicle attack in Évreux, another city in Normandy.
On August 30, 2025, a car was deliberately driven into a crowd outside a bar in central Évreux after an altercation inside the establishment. One man was killed and five others were injured, including two who were critically wounded.
French prosecutors at the time also ruled out a terrorist motive and investigated the incident as homicide and attempted homicide.
That earlier case also involved a dispute inside a bar that escalated after customers were forced outside. Investigators said a person then drove a vehicle at high speed into the crowd.
The similarities between the two incidents — both occurring in Normandy and reportedly following altercations near entertainment venues — have drawn attention, although there is no indication that the two cases are connected.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

French authorities are now working to establish exactly what triggered the Caen incident and whether the suspect acted deliberately in response to the reported altercation.
The absence of an apparent terrorist motive means investigators are currently treating the case as a serious criminal investigation rather than an act of terrorism.
For the victims and their families, however, the immediate concern remains the human cost: two lives lost, several people critically injured and a community left shaken by violence in a busy public area.
