Türkiye and Ethiopia signed an MoU to boost energy cooperation, focusing on electricity, renewable energy, and hydroelectric projects, while promoting investment and knowledge sharing. The partnership will also expand into sectors like mining, education, health, and transportation.

Türkiye is making significant efforts to strengthen its collaboration with Ethiopia across the energy sector, focusing on sharing expertise, implementing concrete projects, and enhancing existing cooperation in a broad spectrum of areas, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated on Tuesday. The announcement came during a high-level diplomatic engagement in Addis Ababa, coinciding with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Ethiopia.
As part of this initiative, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation was signed between the Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry and the Ethiopian Water and Energy Ministry. The signing ceremony brought together Bayraktar and Ethiopian Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa, underscoring the commitment of both countries to advance bilateral relations and foster mutual development in critical sectors.
Under the terms of the agreement, Türkiye and Ethiopia will collaborate on a variety of projects that encompass electricity generation, renewable energy development, and energy efficiency initiatives. The partnership also includes cooperation on the production and installation of hydroelectric power plant equipment and electric turbines, aiming to bolster Ethiopia’s energy infrastructure and technological capabilities. Moreover, the MoU emphasizes support for both public and private sector investments in energy infrastructure projects, particularly those related to electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. A key component of the agreement is the facilitation of active exchange of information, knowledge, and experience between the relevant institutions in both countries, which is expected to strengthen technical expertise and foster innovation.
Minister Bayraktar highlighted the importance of this collaboration on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, stating, “We aim to strengthen the sharing of experience and produce concrete projects in a wide range of areas, from electricity generation to grid infrastructure, from renewable energy investments to hydroelectric infrastructure projects.” He further emphasized that the cooperation extends beyond the energy sector, describing the comprehensive roadmap agreed upon with Ethiopia. “We have agreed on a comprehensive roadmap to deepen our existing cooperation and concretise new areas of partnership across a wide range of sectors, from energy and mining to education, health, transportation, agriculture, environment, urban planning, culture, and tourism,” Bayraktar added.
This strategic partnership reflects Türkiye’s broader commitment to fostering regional cooperation, sharing technical expertise, and contributing to sustainable development initiatives in Africa, while also creating opportunities for investment and innovation in critical infrastructure projects. Through these efforts, both Türkiye and Ethiopia aim to establish a long-term framework for collaboration that benefits multiple sectors, strengthens bilateral ties, and supports the sustainable growth of their economies.
