Xi Jinping Urges Stronger China-EU Ties to Boost Global Stability

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged China and the European Union (EU) to contribute more stability and certainty to the world by fostering steady and sound China-EU relations.
He made these remarks during a meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who were in Beijing for the 25th China-EU Summit.
Highlighting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Xi noted that China-EU ties have arrived at a new and significant historical crossroads.
Over the past five decades, he said, the two sides have achieved substantial progress in dialogue and collaboration, yielding mutual successes and benefiting the world at large. Xi emphasized that a key lesson from this experience is that China and the EU must continue to respect one another, recognize and accommodate differences while seeking common ground, remain open and cooperative, and pursue mutually beneficial outcomes.
These principles, he stressed, should continue to guide China-EU relations in the future.
In the face of a rapidly changing global landscape and mounting global uncertainties not seen in a century, Xi called on Chinese and EU leaders to demonstrate renewed vision and leadership. He urged them to make strategic decisions that respond to the aspirations of their people and withstand the judgment of history.
President Xi emphasized that China and the EU, as important champions of multilateralism and cooperation, must step up dialogue, build mutual trust, and deepen collaboration amid an increasingly complex and volatile international environment. By doing so, they can provide much-needed stability and predictability to the global order through a healthy and resilient China-EU partnership.
He concluded by stating that as two major powers in the international arena, China and the EU should ensure their relationship continues on a positive trajectory and join efforts to usher in an even more promising and dynamic next 50 years.
