At least 16 people have died in South Korea as the country endures one of the most intense heatwaves in its recorded history, prompting President Lee Jae Myung to call for urgent reforms to strengthen the country's response to increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
According to South Korea's Interior Ministry, 2,025 people have suffered heat-related illnesses between 15 May and 2 August, as soaring temperatures continue to grip much of the country.
Health authorities have urged vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and outdoor workers, to take extra precautions as the heatwave shows little sign of easing.

PRESIDENT WARNS EXTREME WEATHER IS THE NEW NORMAL

Speaking during a cabinet meeting, President Lee said South Korea must fundamentally strengthen its disaster management system as climate-related emergencies become more common.
"We need to make efforts for a fundamental overhaul of the national crisis system, since this extreme weather is becoming normal," he said.
He also instructed government agencies to accelerate measures aimed at protecting lives, while ordering inspections of electricity infrastructure as demand for air conditioning places increasing pressure on the national power grid.

RECORD TEMPERATURES RECORDED

The country's southeastern city of Yangsan recorded 42.5 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature officially measured in South Korea since weather observations began 122 years ago.
Authorities also expanded the country's first-ever heatwave warning for Seoul and neighbouring Gyeonggi Province to cover the entire capital.
The advisory system, introduced this year, is designed to provide earlier warnings during periods of exceptionally dangerous temperatures.
Temperatures in Seoul reached 38 degrees Celsius, with overnight temperatures expected to remain close to 29 degrees, offering little relief from the heat.
More than 4,000 public facilities have been designated as cooling centres where residents can seek shelter.
The wider Seoul metropolitan area is home to more than 25 million people, representing nearly half of South Korea's population.

CLIMATE CHANGE DRIVING MORE EXTREME HEAT

Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is increasing the frequency, duration and intensity of extreme heat events worldwide.
The latest South Korean heatwave follows a series of record-breaking temperature events across Asia and Europe during 2026.
In neighbouring Japan, authorities recently introduced the term "cruelly hot days" to describe temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The extreme conditions also resulted in the deaths of three lions at Tokyo's Tama Zoo, which officials linked to suspected heatstroke.
Across Europe, Germany has already recorded its highest annual number of heat-related deaths since nationwide monitoring began, while several countries have faced repeated heat emergencies this summer.

GROWING CHALLENGE FOR GOVERNMENTS

The latest fatalities in South Korea underscore the growing challenge governments face in protecting populations from increasingly severe climate extremes.
Experts say countries will need stronger early warning systems, expanded cooling infrastructure, improved public health planning and long-term climate adaptation measures to reduce the impact of future heatwaves.
Authorities in South Korea continue to urge residents to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activities and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke develop.
