Türkiye has expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives in a Nigerian military aircraft crash in Ondo State, offering condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Nigeria.
The aircraft, operated by the Nigerian Air Force, crashed while travelling from Benin to Lagos. The incident has led to an official mourning period in Nigeria and the launch of an investigation into what caused the aircraft to go down.

TÜRKIYE EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES TO NIGERIA

Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the accident.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry expressed condolences to the families of those who died and to the people of Nigeria.
The message reflects the international response to the crash as Nigeria begins the difficult process of recovering from the tragedy and determining what happened to the aircraft.

NIGERIA DECLARES THREE DAYS OF MOURNING

President Bola Tinubu declared three days of mourning following the crash and ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The mourning period is intended to honour the military personnel who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
The decision also highlights the seriousness of the incident, which involved an aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force and operating on a routine mission.

AIRCRAFT CRASHED NEAR IGBOKODA NAVAL BASE

Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the aircraft crashed near the Igbokoda Naval Base in Ondo State.
Initial information provided by officials indicated that the aircraft was travelling from Benin towards Lagos when it crashed.
The wreckage was subsequently located, while search and rescue personnel were deployed to the area.
The location of the crash also brought emergency and security agencies into the response as authorities worked to recover the victims and secure the accident site.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE REVISES NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON BOARD

There was initially uncertainty over the number of people travelling on the aircraft.
Keyamo had earlier said that 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board, giving a total of 32 people.
The Nigerian Air Force later revised the figures, stating that the aircraft was carrying 20 passengers and five crew members, making 25 people in total.
The Air Force said there were no survivors.
The difference between the initial and later figures illustrates why authorities normally rely on official passenger and crew records before confirming the final number of people involved in an aviation accident.

AIRCRAFT WAS ON A ROUTINE MILITARY MISSION

According to the Nigerian Air Force, the aircraft was conducting a routine mission when the crash occurred.
The aircraft was an ATR 42, a twin engine turboprop aircraft used for regional transport and other operational duties.
At this stage, the exact circumstances that caused the aircraft to crash have not been established. Investigators will be expected to examine the aircraft, its maintenance history, flight records, weather conditions, communications and other factors that could help explain what happened.

INVESTIGATION WILL DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE CRASH

The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events before the aircraft went down and identify whether mechanical, operational, environmental or other factors played a role.
Investigators will also examine the wreckage and other available evidence as part of the process of determining the cause.
For the families of the victims, the investigation is important not only for establishing what happened but also for helping authorities identify any safety lessons that could prevent similar accidents in the future.

A TRAGEDY FOR NIGERIA’S MILITARY COMMUNITY

The crash has brought mourning to the Nigerian military and to the families and communities connected to those who were on board.
The victims were travelling as part of a military operation when their aircraft went down, making the incident a loss for both their families and the institution in which they served.
As Nigeria observes the three days of mourning, attention will remain on the recovery operation, the identification and return of the victims to their families, and the investigation into the cause of the crash.
