Tinubu Orders Probe Of Google, Meta, X And AI Platforms Over Use Of Nigerian Media Content
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major global technology companies and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms over allegations that they are engaging in anti-competitive practices and using the content of Nigerian media organisations without proper compensation.
The directive followed a joint petition submitted to the Presidency by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), which represents newspaper owners, journalists, broadcasters and online publishers. The media organisations accused some of the world's biggest technology companies of benefiting from Nigerian news content while contributing little or nothing to the organisations that produce it.
According to the Federal Government, the investigation will examine whether the activities of these companies violate Nigeria's competition laws and whether they have negatively affected the country's media industry. Officials say the inquiry will be conducted fairly, transparently and based on available evidence.
The investigation comes at a time when media organisations around the world are demanding fair compensation from digital platforms and AI companies that use news content to attract users, train artificial intelligence systems and generate advertising revenue.
Government officials say the goal is not to punish any company but to ensure fairness, protect local content creators and promote healthy competition in Nigeria's digital economy.
The directive was conveyed through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
Officials said the investigation is intended to determine whether the companies have violated Nigeria's competition and consumer protection laws.
The government stressed that the inquiry will follow due process.
Certain Generative Artificial Intelligence platforms operating in Nigeria will also be examined.
Authorities said the inquiry will review how these platforms use news content produced by Nigerian media organisations.
Officials will also assess whether their business practices create unfair advantages over local publishers.
The group said many digital platforms benefit from news stories produced by newspapers, broadcasters and online publishers without providing adequate compensation.
According to the organisation, this has contributed to declining advertising revenue and made it increasingly difficult for media companies to sustain quality journalism.
The petition also raised concerns about the growing use of Nigerian news content by artificial intelligence platforms.
He explained that every company involved would be given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations before any conclusions are reached.
Bello said the investigation is not based on an assumption of wrongdoing but is intended to establish the facts.
He added that protecting fair competition remains one of the commission's key responsibilities.
However, they also stressed that innovation should not come at the expense of media organisations that invest time and resources in producing original news content.
Officials said maintaining a balanced digital ecosystem would benefit consumers, publishers, technology companies and the wider economy.
They added that fair competition encourages investment and supports sustainable business growth.
Analysts say its outcome could influence how digital platforms and AI companies interact with Nigerian media organisations in the future.
If regulators find evidence of anti-competitive practices or unfair business conduct, the government could introduce new measures aimed at protecting local publishers and ensuring that content creators receive fair value for their work.
Officials said the process will remain transparent as the government seeks to promote both technological innovation and a sustainable media industry.
