NIGERIA APPOINTS NEW COMMANDER FOR OPERATION HADIN KAI

The Nigerian Army has appointed Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose as the new commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the military operation fighting Boko Haram and its Islamic State-affiliated splinter group, ISWAP, in northeastern Nigeria.
Ajose replaces Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, who became the 15th commander of the operation in April 2025.
The change was announced as Nigeria prepares for its next general elections, with insecurity remaining a major concern in several parts of the country.

ARMY SAYS SHAKE-UP IS AIMED AT IMPROVING OPERATIONS

Army spokesperson Appolonia Anele said the appointment was part of a wider military reshuffle involving 15 generals.
According to the Army, the changes are intended to improve operational effectiveness, strengthen leadership and align command structures with Nigeria's changing security challenges.
The military did not say that Abubakar's removal was connected to any recent attack or specific security failure in the northeast.
Ajose previously served at Army Headquarters in Abuja before taking over the command.

BOKO HARAM AND ISWAP REMAIN A MAJOR SECURITY THREAT

Boko Haram's insurgency began in northeastern Nigeria in 2009 and has developed into one of the country's longest-running security crises.
The conflict has also produced splinter groups, including ISWAP, which emerged after internal divisions within Boko Haram.
According to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), violence linked to Boko Haram and its splinter group has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced millions since the insurgency began.
The violence has affected communities across Borno, Yobe and parts of Adamawa states, while attacks and insecurity have also contributed to wider humanitarian problems.

INSECURITY COULD AFFECT THE 2027 ELECTIONS

The latest military leadership change comes as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 general elections.
Security concerns disrupted voting in some parts of northeastern Nigeria during the previous presidential election, demonstrating the difficulties authorities face in providing safe access to polling stations in areas affected by insurgency.
Beyond the northeast, Nigeria continues to battle banditry, kidnappings and other forms of armed violence in different regions.
The security situation is therefore expected to remain an important issue as political parties and electoral authorities prepare for the next polls.

OPERATION HADIN KAI PLAYS A CENTRAL ROLE

Operation Hadin Kai is the Nigerian military's main counter-insurgency operation in the northeast.
Its responsibilities include confronting insurgents, protecting vulnerable communities, supporting the return of displaced residents and helping to maintain security along major routes and settlements.
The operation has faced the challenge of dealing with insurgents who can move through difficult terrain and use asymmetric tactics, including ambushes, raids and attacks on military and civilian targets.
