Ghana Loses Former First Lady at 76
Ghana is mourning the passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, widow of former President Jerry John Rawlings, who died at the age of 76 at the Ridge Hospital in Accra following a brief illness.
Nana Konadu served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001 and was a prominent political and social figure, founding the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM), an organisation dedicated to empowering women across Ghana. Her work through the DWM focused on enhancing social, educational, and professional opportunities for women nationwide, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s gender equality landscape.
Tributes quickly poured in on social media from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens alike, celebrating her decades-long dedication to public service and women’s advocacy. Known as a tireless advocate and nation-builder, Nana Konadu’s legacy continues to inspire future generations, demonstrating that true leadership extends far beyond the corridors of power.
Her husband, former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away in 2020, and together, the couple played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s modern political and social fabric.
