According to local authorities, the bus was travelling from the city of Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape when it plunged down a mountainous section of the road, leaving a scene of devastation. Emergency responders rushed to the site to assist the injured, many of whom were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the accident remains unclear, and authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the crash. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, alongside other government officials, is expected to visit both the crash site and the hospitals treating survivors.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences, describing the incident as a tragedy not only for South Africa but also for “our sister states of Zimbabwe and Malawi.” He emphasised that the loss of life is deeply felt across the region, particularly given the number of children among the victims.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers thrown from the bus and debris scattered across the embankment. Authorities are still attempting to determine the total number of people on board and whether safety protocols were followed.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety in South Africa, particularly along hazardous mountainous routes frequently used for long-distance travel. Road transport experts have warned that overloading, driver fatigue, and poor infrastructure continue to contribute to fatal accidents across the country.

As the investigation continues, families of the victims are mourning, and communities in Limpopo, Zimbabwe, and Malawi are grappling with the devastating human toll of what should have been a routine journey home.
