TRAGEDY AT OKRIKA JETTY

At least 37 people have died after inhaling toxic petroleum fumes during an alleged oil theft operation at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, according to the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria).
The incident occurred around midnight on Thursday, September 3, when a large group of people reportedly gathered at the jetty to siphon petroleum products from an illegally tapped pipeline.
Several other people are still missing, while survivors reportedly suffered serious breathing difficulties and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that an incident occurred and said the victims were allegedly attempting to steal crude oil. However, police did not immediately confirm the reported death toll, saying investigations were underway to establish what happened and determine the actual number of casualties.

HOW THE INCIDENT HAPPENED

According to community sources cited by Nigerian media, more than 100 people from Okrika and neighbouring communities arrived at the waterfront in locally made boats.
They allegedly connected a pipe to an illegal tapping point on a pipeline carrying petroleum products linked to the Indorama Eleme Petrochemical facility and the Port Harcourt Refinery.
At the same time, a vessel was reportedly loading petroleum products at the jetty.
The situation suddenly became deadly when a strong concentration of fumes filled the area.
Several people reportedly collapsed, with some falling into the river as they attempted to escape. Others who survived were said to have developed severe respiratory problems.
YEAC-Nigeria Executive Director, Dr Fyneface Dumnamene, said the victims inhaled what residents locally referred to as “Indorama fuel” while the petroleum product was being pumped at high pressure.
He said some bodies had reportedly been seen floating in the water but had not yet been recovered.

POLICE BEGIN INVESTIGATION

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident but has been more cautious about the casualty figure.
Police spokesperson ASP Blessing Agabe said the victims reportedly died while attempting to steal crude oil and that no official complaint had been received by the command at the time of the initial statement.
She said an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ascertain the facts.
The difference between the police position and the figures reported by community sources and YEAC-Nigeria means the 37 deaths should currently be treated as a reported toll rather than a final official figure.
Some Nigerian reports have even cited a higher figure, including 43 deaths, showing that the casualty count remained unsettled as recovery operations continued.

YOUTHS CAUGHT IN A DANGEROUS CYCLE

The tragedy has once again exposed the dangerous intersection between poverty, unemployment and illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta.
Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika, Igwe Godswill, described the victims as mostly young people searching for ways to make a living.
He appealed to government authorities and community leaders to provide legitimate employment opportunities, warning that simply stopping illegal oil activities without addressing unemployment could leave vulnerable youths with few alternatives.
The appeal highlights one of the region's most difficult problems: oil theft is illegal and extremely dangerous, yet some residents have become economically dependent on activities connected to the illicit petroleum trade.

A REGION RICH IN OIL BUT POOR IN MANY COMMUNITIES

The Niger Delta contains much of Nigeria's oil and gas wealth, but many communities in the region have endured decades of environmental degradation, polluted waterways and inadequate economic opportunities.
Oil spills and illegal refining have contaminated parts of the region, while pipeline vandalism and crude theft have created additional environmental and security problems.
The latest Okrika tragedy demonstrates another danger: people operating around illegally tapped pipelines can be exposed to highly concentrated petroleum vapours, fires, explosions and drowning.
YEAC-Nigeria has called for a formal investigation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and urged the operators responsible for the affected infrastructure to strengthen pipeline security.

ILLEGAL OIL ACTIVITIES HAVE CLAIMED MANY LIVES

The Okrika deaths are not an isolated tragedy.
In October 2021, at least 25 people, including children, were killed in an explosion at an illegal oil refinery in Rivers State. Several houses were also destroyed and others were injured.
Illegal refining sites are particularly hazardous because crude oil is processed using makeshift equipment, often without proper safety systems.
Fire outbreaks, explosions and toxic exposure have repeatedly killed people involved in or living near such operations.
The repeated disasters have fuelled calls for stronger enforcement alongside programmes that create safer and legitimate economic opportunities for communities.

NIGERIA CONTINUES TO BATTLE OIL THEFT

Oil theft has remained a major challenge for Nigeria, one of Africa's leading oil producers.
Criminal networks have developed sophisticated methods of tapping pipelines, transporting stolen crude through waterways and illegally refining or exporting petroleum products.
The consequences extend beyond lost government revenue.
Pipeline vandalism can damage infrastructure, cause spills and contaminate farmland and waterways. Illegal refineries also release pollutants and expose workers and nearby communities to dangerous fires and toxic substances.

YEAC-Nigeria has proposed alternative livelihood initiatives, including support for modular refining and other legitimate economic opportunities.
Whether such measures can reduce oil theft remains uncertain, but the latest deaths underline the consequences of relying solely on enforcement without addressing the economic realities in oil-producing communities.
For Okrika, the immediate priority is recovery and identification of the dead and missing.
For the wider Niger Delta, the tragedy is another warning that Nigeria's oil wealth continues to carry an enormous human and environmental cost.
