Liverpool and Chelsea shared the points in a disappointing Premier League draw at Anfield, with both sides missing the opportunity to strengthen their bids for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Winners and Losers as Liverpool and Chelsea Play Out Frustrating Premier League Stalemate
Given the stakes surrounding the contest, many had expected an entertaining encounter between two of England’s biggest clubs. Instead, the match largely failed to live up to expectations despite flashes of individual quality from both teams.
Ryan Gravenberch briefly lifted the atmosphere with a stunning early goal for Liverpool, while Chelsea eventually rescued a point through a cleverly delivered free-kick from Enzo Fernández that deceived everyone, including goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The draw leaves Liverpool vulnerable in the race for a top-four finish, while Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification remain uncertain despite ending a poor run of league form.
Winners
Rio Ngumoha
One of the brightest performers on the afternoon was teenage Liverpool talent Rio Ngumoha.
With key attacking figures such as Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké unavailable, Liverpool needed creativity from elsewhere, and Ngumoha stepped forward impressively.
The youngster consistently troubled Chelsea defender Malo Gusto with his direct running, confidence and intelligent movement.
Ngumoha played a crucial role in Liverpool’s opening goal after spotting Gravenberch in space on the edge of the area. His perfectly weighted pass allowed the Dutch midfielder to curl a superb strike into the top corner.
The teenager’s influence was evident throughout the first half, and supporters voiced their frustration when head coach Arne Slot substituted him midway through the second period.
Enzo Fernández
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández once again demonstrated his growing influence within the side.
Despite recent speculation linking him with Real Madrid, the Argentine produced another energetic and intelligent display in midfield.
Operating in advanced areas alongside Cole Palmer, Fernández repeatedly exploited gaps in Liverpool’s defensive structure and caused problems with his movement beyond the back line.
Although he missed one particularly promising opportunity, his creativity and attacking intent played a major role in shifting momentum in Chelsea’s favour during the latter stages of the first half.
His equalising free-kick ultimately secured an important point for Chelsea and further enhanced his growing reputation.
Marc Cucurella
Marc Cucurella continued his excellent recent form with another highly effective performance for Chelsea.
Used in a more advanced role on the left flank by interim manager Calum McFarlane due to several attacking absentees, Cucurella adapted superbly and became one of Chelsea’s most dangerous players.
The Spaniard constantly targeted Liverpool’s makeshift right side and linked effectively with Fernández and João Pedro.
He also came close to creating what would have been Chelsea’s winning goal early in the second half, only for VAR to rule out the move for offside.
Cucurella’s energy, tactical intelligence and consistency continue to make him one of Chelsea’s most reliable performers.
Losers
Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong endured another frustrating afternoon in what has been a difficult first season at Liverpool.
Injuries and positional changes have disrupted the Dutchman’s campaign, but his performance against Chelsea again highlighted his struggles to adapt.
The former Bayer Leverkusen star failed to offer consistent attacking threat and rarely looked capable of stretching Chelsea’s defence.
Frimpong completed neither of his attempted dribbles and produced very little quality in the final third, increasing concerns among supporters about Liverpool’s attacking balance when key players are absent.
Defensively, his contribution was also limited, adding to an underwhelming overall display.
Cody Gakpo
Another Liverpool player who endured a disappointing afternoon was Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch forward struggled to influence the game and was largely anonymous throughout his 77 minutes on the pitch.
Gakpo managed only a handful of touches and failed to register a single shot on goal against Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen.
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, making his first Premier League start after recovering from a serious knee injury, was rarely troubled by Liverpool’s central attacker.
Slot eventually replaced Gakpo late in the match after introducing Alexander Isak and later Federico Chiesa in an attempt to inject fresh energy into Liverpool’s attack.
With Liverpool reportedly seeking greater attacking fluidity and sharper movement in the forward line, questions are beginning to emerge over Gakpo’s long-term role at Anfield if his struggles continue.
