Tottenham Hotspur are in discussions to sign João Palhinha on loan, having opened negotiations with Bayern Munich for the Portugal international midfielder.

Palhinha, who moved to Bayern from Fulham last summer in a deal reportedly worth up to £47.4 million, is understood to be eager to return to the Premier League after struggling for regular game time under new Bayern manager Vincent Kompany.

Spurs' new head coach, Thomas Frank, is keen to strengthen his midfield options and has identified the 30-year-old as a priority target. Talks between the two clubs are ongoing, with Bayern expected to approve Palhinha’s departure. However, it remains unclear whether any potential agreement would include an option or obligation to buy at the end of the loan spell.

Tottenham recently defeated Arsenal 1–0 in a pre-season north London derby held at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong—marking the first time the fixture has been played overseas. The win came courtesy of a stunning long-range goal by Pape Matar Sarr.

Adding Palhinha to their squad would offer Spurs significant Premier League experience in midfield. The Portuguese international made nearly 80 top-flight appearances during his two-season spell at Fulham, having joined from Sporting CP in 2022.

This summer, Tottenham have already secured the services of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich for a fee of around £30 million. The French forward spent the second half of last season on loan at the north London club. They have also brought in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United, although their efforts to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White were unsuccessful.
