Manchester United reportedly approached Aston Villa over the potential signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez during the January transfer window, as concerns over André Onana's form continued to grow under manager Rúben Amorim.

Following a disappointing campaign in which United finished 15th in the Premier League—missing out on European football for only the second time in 35 years—the club had been eager to reinforce its squad ahead of a challenging second half of the season.

Onana, signed to much fanfare, endured a turbulent spell between the posts, committing several high-profile errors. His inconsistent performances ultimately led to him being dropped for United’s April fixture against Newcastle.

According to reports from Argentine outlet TyC Sports, United made contact with Aston Villa in January to explore the possibility of signing World Cup-winning goalkeeper Martínez. However, the club opted to keep faith in Onana at the time—a decision that may have backfired.

Onana’s struggles persisted throughout the latter stages of the season. Notably, he was at fault for two costly errors in a 2–2 draw against Lyon during the first leg of their crucial UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie.

The match was also overshadowed by a heated war of words between Onana and former United midfielder Nemanja Matić—now at Lyon—after Onana had remarked that “Lyon are a very good team, but I think we are better than them.” Matić responded by branding Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history.”

With Amorim set to reshape his squad this summer, speculation over Onana’s future at Old Trafford continues to mount—and it remains to be seen whether United will revisit their interest in Martínez.
