Barcelona staged a commanding comeback to defeat Atletico Madrid 3–1 on Wednesday, moving four points clear at the top of La Liga. Coach Hansi Flick hailed the performance as a step forward after a period of inconsistent displays.
Barcelona Come From Behind to Beat Atletico Madrid and Extend La Liga Lead
Alex Baena gave Atletico an early lead, but Raphinha levelled for the champions before Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres secured the victory, ending Atletico’s 13-game unbeaten league run. Barcelona might have been more comfortable, had Robert Lewandowski not missed a first-half penalty at the partially rebuilt Camp Nou.
With the win, Barcelona extend their advantage as Real Madrid, in second place, travel to Athletic Bilbao, while Diego Simeone’s Atletico remain fourth, six points behind the Catalans.
Flick Praises His Side’s Performance
“We will see if this is a turning point, but this was one of our best matches. I really appreciate what I saw over 90 minutes,” Flick told reporters.
“This was the next step. We are returning to our best level; today was very good.”
The victory marked Barcelona’s fifth consecutive La Liga win following their Clasico defeat to Real Madrid in October. Despite occasional inconsistent performances during this run, the win over a title rival provides a timely boost for Flick’s side.
“This is the spirit we need to turn games around,” Raphinha said after the match.
“We are building confidence game by game, and these three points are crucial for the end of the season. They could decide the title race.”
Team News and Early Tension
Barcelona were without defender Ronald Araujo, reportedly on a mental health break, alongside the injured Frenkie de Jong and other long-term absentees. The team had also endured a 3–0 defeat at Chelsea in the Champions League and a nervy win against Alaves prior to this fixture, adding pressure on home supporters.
Atletico took an early lead, exploiting Barcelona’s high defensive line. Baena raced through on goal and beat Joan Garcia, only to briefly pause as the linesman raised his flag. A VAR review confirmed the goal was legitimate, as Baena was onside.
Barcelona responded quickly, equalising in the 26th minute. Pedri, returning from injury, found Raphinha, who rounded goalkeeper Jan Oblak and slotted the ball into the empty net.
Barcelona should have taken the lead before half-time, but Lewandowski missed a penalty after Pablo Barrios fouled Dani Olmo. The Polish striker nearly redeemed himself moments later, only for Oblak to make a fine save from a header by Lamine Yamal.
Second-Half Comeback and Injuries
In the second half, Olmo gave Barcelona the lead with a composed finish following a rebound from Lewandowski. However, the Spaniard suffered a shoulder injury during the goal and was replaced by Marcus Rashford. Pedri also went off after 70 minutes due to fatigue, according to Flick.
Atletico’s substitute Thiago Almada had their best chance to equalise but lost balance and misfired in the penalty area. In stoppage time, Alejandro Balde set up Ferran Torres, who scored to seal a vital three points and dent Atletico’s title ambitions.
“Atletico were competitive and had a few chances, but Barcelona were superior and scored the third in the final moments,” Oblak told Movistar.
Despite the defeat, Simeone praised his team’s effort. “I am happy with the team’s performance. We competed well, but we couldn’t be efficient in front of goal, which is what we demand,” he said.
