Virgil van Dijk Faces Scrutiny as Japan’s Late Equaliser Denies Netherlands World Cup Victory

Virgil van Dijk endured a mixed evening as the Netherlands surrendered victory in dramatic fashion against Japan in one of the standout matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.

The Dutch captain appeared set to be the hero after opening the scoring early in the second half, only for attention to later shift to his defensive role in Japan’s dramatic late equaliser as the match ended 2–2 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Van Dijk Opens the Scoring but Netherlands Fail to Hold On

After a cautious first half with few clear opportunities, the contest burst into life after the interval.

Five minutes into the second half, Van Dijk rose superbly to meet Ryan Gravenberch’s delivery and guided a precise header into the far corner to give the Netherlands the lead.

Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura brought his side level after collecting a pass from Takefusa Kubo before firing a low effort beyond Bart Verbruggen.

The Netherlands regained control in the 64th minute through Crysencio Summerville.

The winger, making only his third senior international appearance, cut inside onto his left foot and produced an excellent finish via the far post to restore the Dutch advantage.

With the Netherlands protecting a narrow lead heading into the closing stages, Japan increased the pressure and committed numbers forward.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 88th minute.

From a corner delivered by Junya Ito, Koki Ogawa rose highest inside the area and directed a header goalwards. The ball took a slight touch before finding its way beyond Verbruggen to level the match once again.

The equaliser sparked celebrations among Japanese supporters and ensured their side claimed a valuable point.

Although Van Dijk was later named Player of the Match, the late goal led to criticism from some supporters who questioned his marking during the decisive moment.

The Dutch defender, widely recognised as one of the strongest aerial defenders in world football, found himself under scrutiny after being unable to prevent Japan’s equalising header.

Reaction across social media focused heavily on the contrast between Van Dijk’s attacking contribution and the defensive moment that denied the Netherlands all three points.

Despite the criticism, his overall performance still included leadership, defensive organisation and the opening goal.

For long periods, Ronald Koeman’s side looked capable of securing victory.
