Tottenham Hotspur have completed the permanent signing of French forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on a six-year contract.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Spurs from the Bundesliga champions, making 20 appearances and scoring three goals.

While the initial loan agreement included a £45.8 million option to buy, the PA news agency understands that Tottenham successfully negotiated the fee down to £29.8 million.

Tel joined Bayern Munich from Rennes in 2022 and featured prominently in his early seasons, making 69 appearances across all competitions. However, his role diminished following the arrival of manager Vincent Kompany last summer, and he made just eight Bundesliga appearances in the first half of the campaign before being loaned to Spurs.

He had originally turned down a move to North London but made a late U-turn towards the end of the January transfer window.

Tottenham endured a difficult domestic season, finishing 17th in the Premier League—marking their lowest-ever finish—but still managed to secure Champions League qualification through a 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Tel, who was an unused substitute during the final in Bilbao, is currently representing France at the Under-21 European Championships in Slovakia. He scored his nation’s opening goal of the tournament—a penalty—in their 3–2 victory over Georgia on Saturday, alongside team-mate Wilson Odobert.

Bayern Munich’s director of football, Max Eberl, paid tribute to the young forward, stating:

“Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and took his first steps into top-level international football here. He was a popular figure in our team, always giving his all for the club and the team. It has become clear that the move to Tottenham was the right one for his development.”
