Tottenham Hotspur have expressed their disgust after forward Mathys Tel was subjected to racist abuse on social media in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Tel, 19, missed from the spot during the penalty shoot-out, which Spurs lost 4-3 after surrendering a late two-goal lead in Udine, Italy. The France Under-21 international, whose loan move from Bayern Munich was made permanent in June for £30 million, fired his effort wide as the Champions League holders went on to lift the trophy.

In a strongly-worded statement, Tottenham condemned the abuse and vowed to work with authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat.

Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.

We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys.”

Tottenham appeared to be on course for victory at the Bluenergy Stadium, with Micky van de Ven opening the scoring in the first half and Cristian Romero doubling the lead shortly after the interval. However, late goals from Lee Kang-in in the 85th minute and Gonçalo Ramos in stoppage time forced the game to penalties, where PSG emerged victorious.
