Spain advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 after a composed 2–0 win against hosts Switzerland on Friday, setting up a meeting with either France or Germany.

Following a goalless first half that saw Mariona Caldentey miss a penalty, the breakthrough came in the 66th minute. Aitana Bonmatí delivered a moment of brilliance with a deft back-heel, setting up substitute Athenea del Castillo, who calmly guided the ball past Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng.

Just five minutes later, Spain doubled their lead. Switzerland captain Lia Wälti was caught in possession on the edge of her own area, allowing Claudia Pina to curl a superb effort into the top corner.

The drama did not end there. Spain’s Alexia Putellas missed a second penalty late on, and Switzerland’s Noelle Maritz received a straight red card in stoppage time for a rash challenge, bringing the hosts’ historic campaign to a close. It was the first time Switzerland had reached the knockout stages of the competition.
