Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski announced on Sunday that he would no longer represent the Poland national team while current head coach Michał Probierz remains in charge.

The 36-year-old forward, who has earned 158 caps and scored 85 goals for his country, has reportedly lost confidence in the national team setup. His decision follows his recent replacement as team captain by Piotr Zieliński.

“Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,” Lewandowski stated via X (formerly Twitter).

However, the former Bayern Munich striker did not rule out a potential return to the national side in future.

“I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world,” he added.

Probierz, who took over as Poland’s head coach in 2023, successfully led the team to qualification for the UEFA Euro 2024 finals. However, Poland endured a disappointing campaign, failing to win a single match and exiting the tournament at the group stage.
