Real Madrid secured a hard-fought first-leg advantage in their UEFA Champions League play-off tie against Benfica courtesy of a magnificent strike from Vinícius Júnior — yet the Brazilian’s goal was ultimately overshadowed by allegations of racist abuse.

The 25-year-old forward fired Madrid ahead early in the second half with a superb curling effort. Referee Francois Letexier subsequently cautioned him for his celebration, a decision that drew debate but was quickly eclipsed by more serious events.

Match Paused Following Allegation

Before play had fully resumed, Vinícius alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had directed a racist remark towards him. Television footage showed the Argentine speaking while covering his mouth with his shirt during an exchange with the Madrid forward.

Play was halted for approximately ten minutes at the Estádio da Luz in accordance with UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.

Forward Kylian Mbappe later described the incident in detail.

“There was a moment of tension with Benfica players, which can happen because this is the Champions League and everyone wants to win,” Mbappé told the club’s official website.
“Then Benfica’s number 25 started speaking badly. He lifted his shirt and said that Vini is a monkey five times — I heard it. There are Benfica players who heard it too. From that point, you all saw what happened.”

As Madrid edged towards a crucial victory, former England striker Alan Shearer, on commentary duty for Amazon Prime, remarked:

“What we should be talking about is a special goal. I suspect the headlines will be very, very different.”

Alexander-Arnold and Arbeloa Voice Support

Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed solidarity with his teammate, noting that Vinícius has previously endured racist abuse during his career.

“He has handled it excellently,” Alexander-Arnold said.
“I cannot comment too much as it is an ongoing investigation, but what happened tonight is a disgrace to football and it has overshadowed an outstanding performance.”

Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa also stood firmly behind his player, urging clarity over the alleged remarks.

“There must be absolutely zero tolerance for racism. These things cannot happen on a football pitch in 2026,” Arbeloa stated in his post-match press conference.
“I believe what Vini told me. I do not believe he would invent something like this, and I will not cast doubt on his words.”

Mourinho’s Remarks Draw Criticism

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho adopted a more measured stance, stating he had heard differing accounts from both players and did not wish to take sides.

However, he also criticised Vinícius’ celebration.

“These talents can do beautiful things, but unfortunately he was not just happy to score that astonishing goal,” Mourinho said.
“When you score like that, you celebrate respectfully.”

The Portuguese coach added that he had reminded Vinícius that “the greatest figure in this club’s history was black”, referencing the late Eusebio.

Mourinho further remarked:

“There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. Wherever Vinícius plays, something happens.”

Those comments were subsequently criticised by former Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Seedorf said:

“I think he made a mistake today in the way he expressed himself. We should never justify racial abuse.
“Saying that wherever Vinícius goes something happens can suggest that provocation makes racism acceptable — and that is very wrong. Nothing justifies racial abuse.”

Investigation Ongoing

UEFA’s protocol was followed during the stoppage, and the governing body is expected to review reports from match officials before determining whether further disciplinary measures are warranted.

While Madrid depart Lisbon with a valuable advantage in the tie, the focus remains firmly on the serious allegations that cast a shadow over what should have been a memorable European night.
