RCD Mallorca have parted company with head coach Jagoba Arrasate following a run of three successive defeats which has left the club in 18th place in La Liga, one point adrift of safety.

The decision comes after Sunday’s 2–0 defeat to Celta Vigo at Balaídos, where Los Bermellones managed just one shot on target in a subdued display in Galicia.

In a statement, Mallorca expressed their gratitude to Arrasate and his coaching staff for their dedication and professionalism, adding that the club is seeking to “open a new chapter with the objective of reversing the current dynamic and facing the challenges that remain this season with the best chances”.

Promising Start Fades

Arrasate was appointed 18 months ago as the successor to Javier Aguirre, who had guided Mallorca to the Copa del Rey final. The expectation was that Arrasate would build upon that foundation and steer the island club towards European contention.

However, the 47-year-old encountered difficulties implementing his preferred counter-attacking philosophy, particularly with a defensive system inherited from his predecessor. For much of his tenure, Mallorca hovered closer to the relegation battle than the European places, although they ultimately secured a respectable 10th-place finish last season — four points shy of continental qualification.

This campaign has proved more turbulent. Early-season tension emerged when veteran midfielder Dani Rodríguez publicly questioned the selection of Jan Virgili ahead of him for a fixture against Real Madrid.

A subsequent tactical shift to a back four brought brief improvement, yet inconsistency persisted. Despite Vedat Muriqi establishing himself as the second-highest scorer in La Liga, recent results have seen Mallorca slip into the relegation zone.

Arrasate departs with a record of 21 wins, 15 draws and 32 defeats from 68 matches in charge, during which his side scored 69 goals and conceded 94 — averaging 1.15 points per game.

Toni Amor Linked with Vacancy

According to Marca, Mexico assistant manager Toni Amor has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Arrasate. The 49-year-old is currently part of Aguirre’s coaching staff with the Mexican national team but is a native of Mallorca.

Amor has previously worked alongside Aguirre at Leganés, Monterrey and Mallorca, and his contract with Mexico is due to expire after the upcoming World Cup. His prior managerial experience includes spells at UD Ibiza (2017–18), UD Arenal and Atlético Baleares in the early 2000s.

Mallorca are now expected to move swiftly as they attempt to arrest their slide and preserve their La Liga status.
