The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team earned its first Ivy League victory of the 2026 season with a dramatic 1-0 win over Princeton on Saturday, 10 October. Senior forward Abbey Cook scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, while goalkeeper Ria Desai produced seven saves to record her first career shutout. The result also ended Penn’s eight-match losing streak against Princeton, securing its first victory over the Tigers since 2014.
Penn Women’s Soccer Beat Princeton 1-0 to Secure First Ivy League Win
Penn Claim Crucial Conference Victory
Penn’s women’s soccer team secured a significant result on Saturday night, defeating Princeton 1-0 at Roberts Stadium in Princeton, New Jersey, to register its first Ivy League win of the season.
The Quakers entered the contest looking to turn their early conference campaign around after earning their first Ivy League point in a 2-2 draw against Brown on 3 October. Their performance against Princeton delivered the breakthrough they needed, lifting their conference record to one win, one draw and one defeat.
The victory also carried added importance because Princeton had won the previous eight meetings between the two sides.
Abbey Cook Delivers Late Decisive Goal
With the contest appearing destined to finish goalless, Penn found the breakthrough in the 88th minute through senior forward Abbey Cook.
The move began after Penn regained possession in Princeton’s half. Hailey Adamsky helped advance the ball before Lily White carried it towards the penalty area and played it wide to Mia Fuss. Fuss then delivered a cross across the goalmouth, allowing Cook to finish and give the visitors a decisive late lead.
Cook’s fifth goal of the season proved enough to settle a closely contested encounter. The strike was also her third goal in Penn’s previous two matches, strengthening her position as the team’s leading scorer.
Fuss and White were credited with assists on the winning goal.
Ria Desai Keeps Princeton at Bay
Penn’s late winner was made possible by an impressive defensive performance, led by goalkeeper Ria Desai.
Making only her second career start, Desai recorded seven saves to secure her first career shutout. She was particularly important as Princeton repeatedly threatened to break the deadlock, producing several key stops during the second half.
Among her notable interventions were saves against Maddie Recupero in the 51st minute and Dylan Jovanovic in the 53rd. Desai continued to deny the hosts as the match progressed, including another stop against Jovanovic in the 76th minute.
Her contribution ensured that Princeton’s attacking pressure did not translate into a goal, giving Penn the platform to claim all three points with its late breakthrough.
Princeton Create More Chances but Cannot Score
The Tigers enjoyed the greater share of attacking opportunities and finished with a 19-9 advantage in total shots. Seven of their attempts were on target, but Desai and the Penn defence held firm throughout the match.
Princeton threatened early, with a first-half corner leading to a header that struck the crossbar. The hosts continued to apply pressure after the interval, forcing Desai into a series of saves as they searched for the opening goal.
Penn also had opportunities of its own, with Cook narrowly missing the target in the first half and Grace Saxton sending a header over the crossbar.
Despite Princeton’s 10-6 advantage in corner kicks, the Tigers were unable to find a way past Penn’s organised defence. Their inability to convert promising chances ultimately proved costly when Cook struck late in the match.
Win Ends Eight-Match Losing Run Against Tigers
Beyond the conference points, the result marked a major milestone for Penn in its rivalry with Princeton. The Quakers had not beaten the Tigers since 2014 and had lost eight consecutive meetings before Saturday’s encounter.
The victory improved Penn’s overall record to 6-4-2 and its Ivy League record to 1-1-1, leaving the team with four points in the conference standings.
For Princeton, the defeat dropped the Tigers to 5-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Ivy League play. It was a frustrating outcome for a side that created more shooting opportunities but could not find the net.
Penn Turn Attention to Columbia Fixture
Penn will look to build on the momentum of the Princeton victory when it returns home to face Columbia on Saturday, 17 October, at Rhodes Field. The match offers the Quakers an opportunity to strengthen their position in the Ivy League standings and maintain the defensive discipline that proved decisive in New Jersey.
After securing a first conference win and ending a long run of defeats against Princeton, Penn will hope Cook’s scoring form and Desai’s performance in goal can provide a foundation for a stronger finish to the league campaign.
